Football Can't Overcome Early Deficit in 20-14 Senior Day Setback to Maritime

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Celebrating Senior Day at Steinbrenner Stadium, the MIT football team fell behind early before a second half comeback came-up just short in a 20-14 NEWMAC loss to Maritime College on Saturday afternoon.

MIT first year running back Brendan Spellman (Bay Village, Ohio) ran for a game-high 91 yards on 24 attempts and sophomore quarterback Shaunak Joshi (Tampa, Fla.) completed 9-of-13 passes for 107 yards and a score in the second half to lead the Engineers. Martime senior quarterback Steven Stassi (East Islip, N.Y.) was 11-for-22 for 134 yards and three scores through the air, adding 38 yards rushing on six attempts on the ground for the Privateers.

THE BASICS:

  • Score: Maritime 20, MIT 14
  • Records: Maritime (5-2 Overall, 3-1 NEWMAC), MIT (2-5 Overall, 0-5 NEWMAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The teams played to a scoreless first quarter before Maritime put the first points on the board with its first drive of the second quarter. The Privateers moved methodically down the field, capping a 14-play 82-yard drive that took over six and half minutes of possession time with a five-yard touchdown pass from Staddi to senior classmate Ian Derda (Guilford, Conn.).
  • Neither team found the end zone on the final two possessions of the first half as Maritime carried the 7-0 advantage into halftime.
  • The Privateers wasted no time adding to their advantage at the start of the second half. The opening Maritime drive saw Stassi connect with graduate student Luke Caliendo (North Babylon, N.Y,) down the sideline for a 69-yard score on the second play from scrimmage, giving the visitors a 14-0 lead after junior Gianni D'Agnese (Melville, N.Y.) made the extra point at 14:05.
  • The next MIT drive saw the Engineers work the ball down to the Maritime six-yard line before the Privateers defense forced a turnover on down with back-to-back tackles for loss by senior Dylan Denicker (Queens, N.Y.) and junior Nick Spista (White Plains, N.Y.). Denicker had ten tackles in the game to lead Maritime.
  • The next Martime possession resulted in a punt that saw MIT takeover on its own 40-yard line. The visitors then delivered the biggest defensive play of the day when senior Nick Tulipano (Bronx, N.Y.) sacked Joshi and forced a fumble that was recovered by junior Jack Kellner (Seaford, N.Y.) at the MIT 11-yard line.
  • It took the Privateers one play to score, as Stassi found senior Devin Cline (Miller Place, N.Y.) for his third touchdown of the day at 4:39 of the third quarter.
  • Trailing 20-0, the MIT offense found a rhythm with Joshi in at quarterback. The sophomore completed four passes as part of a 10-play 78-yard drive that ended with a 29-yard MIT touchdown pass over the middle from Joshi to senior Andrew Hutchison (San Diego, Calif.).
  • Next it was the Engineers' defense that had a chance to reclaim the momentum, forcing a punt on the next Maritime drive that set up the MIT offense on the team's 34-yard line.
  • Joshi again worked the ball down the field, completing five passes, including three consecutive looks to junior Colin Vollmer (Cleveland, Ohio) that helped moved the ball across midfield. MIT moved to the Maritime one-yard line but consecutive attempts from Spellman to rush for the line and Joshi to throw for the score could not push the ball into the end zone. MIT then called on some trickery to put up six, as a reverse to tight end Alex Theriault (Boxford, Mass.) saw the junior  toss a touchdown pass to Vollmer that brought MIT within six with 4:32 to play.
  • Unfortunately, the Engineers would not get another shot on offense as Maritime picked up three first downs over the game's final 4:32 to close out the 20-14 win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • MIT earned 20 first downs in the contest, five more than the Privateers.
  • Both sides moved the ball well with MIT finishing with 269 yards of total offense and Maritime totaling 278.
  • It was an eventful Senior Day for Daniel Monaghan (Northfield, Minn.), as the senior hauled in a tough 10-yard reception in the second half and sent off two punts, including a 58-yard attempt that was downed on the Maritime one-yard line.
  • Sophomore Michael Dennison (Beaufort, S.C) had a team-high five catches for 71 yards for MIT.
  • Junior Chase Williams (Missoula, Mont.), sophomore Dominic Hess (Damascus, Md.) and senior Ryan Hourican (Staten Island, N.Y.) each had seven tackles to lead MIT, while Luck Deignan (Indianapolis, Ind.) broke up five pass attempts for the defense.
  • Caliendo finished as Maritime's leading receiver, making four catches for 82 yards, including the 69-yard score.
  • Joshi made just his third appearance of the season. He is now 11-of-20 for 139 yards and two scores on the year.
  • Cline scored through the air but he was Maritime's leading rusher, totaling 79 yards on 14 attempts.
UP NEXT:
  • MIT will be off next weekend before the Engineers travel to Norwich for a 12:00 PM NEWMAC contest on Saturday, November 9. Maritime will host Salve Regina in NEWMAC play on Saturday, November 2 at 1:00 PM.
