CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The No. 4 MIT women's volleyball team defeated Clark University, 25-17, 25-11, 25-17, in NEWMAC action on Tuesday night in Rockwell Cage. Sophomore
Kayleigh May (Camarillo, Calif.) tallied 27 assists, 10 digs, four aces, and three blocks for the Engineers while graduate student Sofia Scherrer del Llano (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) generated seven kills, seven digs, and two aces for the Cougars.
THE BASICS:
- Score: No. 4 MIT 3, Clark 0 (25-17, 25-11, 25-17)
- Records: No. 4 MIT (25-0 Overall, 9-0 NEWMAC); Clark (12-10 Overall, 5-4 NEWMAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Set 1: MIT built an early lead which grew to 20-10 following a hitting error by Clark. A brief exchange of points ensued until a kill by Scherrer del Llano, an ace from sophomore Harper Chinn (Mamaroneck, N.Y.), and a hitting error brought the Cougars within 23-16. The Engineers reached set point on a kill from sophomore Elise Echarte (Miami Beach, Fla.), however, another kill from Scherrer del Llano extended the frame. MIT quickly capitalized on a hitting miscue by the visitors to secure the 25-17 win.
- Set 2: The Engineers jumped out to a 6-1 lead and never looked back as it cruised to a 25-11 victory.
- Set 3: MIT recorded the first six points before going on to build a 22-9 advantage. Despite the deficit Clark continued to attack as back-to-back aces by Scherrer del Llano narrowed the gap to 23-17. The Engineers replied with a kill from senior Ella Gragg (Morganton, N.C.) and a block by Gragg and sophomore Emma Hickman (Houston, Texas) to capture the match.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Gragg led all players with 10 kills and added eight digs while graduate student Consecrata Rozario (Cary, N.C.) posted six kills and two blocks. Senior Ottavia Personeni (Bethesda, Md.) notched a match-high 17 digs and dished out eight assists as junior Daphne Gavros (Bel Tiburon, Calif.) generated 11 digs and four aces.
- Graduate student Victoria Pastor (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) contributed seven kills while junior Yumeng Liu (Beijing Shi) paced the Cougars with 14 digs. Senior Yvanna Torres (San Juan, Puerto Rico) distributed 14 assists as sophomore Julia Dopazo (Miami, Fla.) registered nine assists and eight digs. First-year Isabella Alcott (Maple Grove, Minn.) and graduate student Camille Flurry (Athens, Ga.) chipped in three and two blocks, respectively.
UP NEXT:
- MIT travels to Wesleyan University for a non-conference tilt on Thursday, October 31 at 6:00 PM. Clark, meanwhile, returns to action on Tuesday, November 5 when it hosts NEWMAC foe Mount Holyoke College at 7:00 PM.
