No. 5 Women’s Volleyball Defeats Mount Holyoke in Three Sets

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The No. 5 MIT women's volleyball team defeated Mount Holyoke College, 25-13, 25-19, 25-22, in NEWMAC action on Saturday afternoon. First-year Julia Tolstova (Redlands, Calif.) paced the Engineers' balanced attack with eight kills and added six digs.

THE BASICS:
  • Score: No. 5 MIT 3, Mount Holyoke 0 (25-13, 25-19, 25-22)
  • Records: No. 5 MIT (16-0 Overall, 4-0 NEWMAC), Mount Holyoke (8-6 Overall, 0-4 NEWMAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Set 1: Tied at nine, a block by junior Ali Gibbs (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) and senior Ella Gragg (Morganton, N.C.) ignited a 16-4 run which was capped by a kill from Gibbs.
  • Set 2: Mount Holyoke inched out to a 7-3 lead, but MIT battled back as a kill by Gibbs put the visitors ahead for good at 14-13. The Lyons stayed close as a kill brought them within 18-17. However, a kill from Gragg kicked off a 7-2 set-ending run.
  • Set 3: The third set was a back-and-forth affair as there were 15 ties and eight lead changes. Trailing 21-19, a kill by first-year Jessie Trapp (Elmhurst, Ill.) along with a block by Gibbs and sophomore Elise Echarte (Miami Beach, Fla.) evened the score. A hitting error gave Mount Holyoke the one-point edge, but the Engineers replied with kills from Trapp, Echarte, and Tolstova to reach match point at 24-22. MIT completed the comeback courtesy of a hitting error by the hosts.
