Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

No. 3 Women's Soccer Falls to Colby, 2-0, in NCAA Second Round

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The No. 3 MIT women's soccer team saw its 15-game winning streak end in the NCAA Second Round as the Engineers were defeated by Colby College by a score of 2-0 on Sunday afternoon on Roberts Field.

THE BASICS
  • Score: Colby 2, MIT 0
  • Records: MIT (21-2-1 Overall), Colby (13-4-3)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The game remained scoreless until the 43rd minute when sophomore Annie Liebich (Boise, Idaho) took a long looping shot from just beyond midfield that tucked under the crossbar to give the Mules a 1-0 advantage.
  • Senior Ashley English (Sheboygan, Wis.) had the best scoring chances for MIT in the first half, but both her shots were saved by MK Marshall (Pomfret, Conn.).
  • Liebich sent a long free kick to the front of the goal where junior Sophie DiGrande (Nahant, Mass.) got a head on it and put it past Maddy Noll (Northbrook, Ill.) at 60:08 to double the Colby lead.
  • The MIT offense quickly looked to get on the board on back-to-back corner kicks from English. She found Madelyn Popilek (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) in front of the goal for a header that was saved by Marshall on her first attempt. Senior Meagan Rowlett (Dana Point, Calif.) then corralled a loose ball off the next English corner, but Marshall made yet another key save to keep MIT scoreless.
  • Sophomore Arianna Doss (Houston, Texas) had yet another scoring chance for the engineers late in the game, but Marshall came up with another save to secure the win for the Mules.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • This was just the second time the Engineers were shut out this season.
  • The two goals are the most MIT has allowed in an NCAA match since the 2021 fourth round against Wesleyan.
  • MIT tied the program record with 15 consecutive wins and came one victory shy of tying the program record for wins in a season.
  • Liebich scored her second goal of the season and DiGrande notched her sixth.
  • Noll suffered her first loss of the season to end her rookie campaign with a 13-1 record.
  • Marshall made seven saves and moved to 9-4-3.
