No. 16 Field Hockey Blanks Salve Regina, 5-0, in Regular Season Finale

NEWPORT, R.I. – Three goals in the second half helped No. 16 MIT pull away for a 5-0 victory over Salve Regina University in NEWMAC field hockey action on Saturday afternoon. Junior Bailey McIntyre (Concord, Mass.) was a factor in four of the Engineers' five goals as she scored twice and earned two assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Sophomore Ingrid Tomovski (Bosch en Duin, Netherlands) opened the scoring with 6:37 left in the first quarter when she backhanded a pass from McIntyre into the top of the cage.
  • MIT's lead grew to 2-0 in the 27th minute courtesy of a goal by senior Eva Oppenheim (Tiburon, Calif.) that was set up by Tomovski during a penalty corner.
  • Following the intermission, the Engineers recorded two goals in a span of six minutes. Tomovski dribbled into the arc and sent a cross to the far post where McIntyre made a diving stab to get it across the goal line in the 37th minute. Senior Ashley Lederman (Villanova, Pa.) followed with a blast from the far side that was set up by McIntyre and senior Avani Narula (Malvern, Pa.) during a penalty corner.
  • McIntyre generated the final goal of the day when she corralled a feed from senior Jordan Dattero (Setauket, N.Y.) that made its way through traffic with 6:35 left to play.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Sophomore Maeve Zimmer (Rockville, Md.) made seven saves in 45 minutes while senior Anna Duncan (St. Louis, Mo.) turned away two shots down the stretch. In addition, sophomore Audrey Oh (Longmeadow, Mass.) came up with a defensive save for MIT.
  • The Engineers ended the day with advantages in shots (34-13), shots on goal (27-10), and penalty corners (15-4).
UP NEXT:
  • As the No. 2 seed in the upcoming NEWMAC Championship, MIT receives a first-round bye and will host either No. 3 WPI or No. 6 Springfield College in the semifinals on Thursday, November 7 at 6:00 PM.
