Women's Swimming and Diving

No. 5 Women's Swimming and Diving Defeats Springfield, 242-57

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The No. 5 MIT women's swimming and diving team won every event as the Engineers earned a 242-57 win over Springfield on Saturday at the Art Linkletter Natatorium.

HOW IT HAPPENED: 
  • MIT opened strong with the top two times in the 400-medley relay. Senior Iris Yang (Seattle, Wash.), first year Sarah Bernard (Brookline, Mass.), graduate student Alexandra Turvey (Vancouver, B.C.), and sophomore Sydney Smith (Atlanta, Ga.) won the event in 3:53.76 followed by first year Olivia Chen (Plano, Texas), sophomore Kailey Simons (Williston Park, N.Y.), junior Lauren Levy (Amherst, N.Y.), and first year Rachel Yang (San Diego, Calif.) with a time of 4:02.86.
  • The Engineers flexed their depth in the 200-free as they claimed the six fastest times led by senior Kate Augustyn (Eau Claire, Wis.) who finished in 1:56.44. Turvey followed with a time of 1:56.97, and first year Jessica Crane (Katonah, N.Y.) rounded out the top-three with a time of 1:58.43.
  • Yang holds the fastest time in the 100-back with her winning time of 55.80.
  • First year Sarah Bernard (Brookline, Mass.) took the win in the 100-breast (1:05.91) and the 400 IM (4:28.62). Her time in the 400 IM is the fastest time in the country by over four seconds. First year Lauren Adler (Ann Arbor, Mich.) took second in the 400 IM with a time of 4:35.76 which ranks fifth in DIII.
  • In the diving well, sophomore Fiora Beratahani (San Jose, Calif.) swept the boards with a NCAA Regional mark scores of 288.46 on the 1-meter and 270.01 on the 3-meter. The Engineers took the top three spots on both boards.
  • Junior Annika Naveen (Wynnewood, Pa.) led the way in the 50-free with a time of 24.59. She was followed closely by Simons (24.69) and Yang (24.79).
  • First year Mary Feliz (Millersville, Md.) won both the 200-fly (2:08.95) and the 500-free (5:15.78).
  • The Engineers capped the day with a 200-free relay win. Simons, Chen, Yang and Naveen took first with a time of 1:37.08. Yang, senior Stella Shipps (Cedar Park, Texas), first year Lillian Poag (Houston, Texas), and Turvey finished in second with a time of 1:37.83.

  • The Engineers return home on Saturday, November 23 when they welcome Bowdoin for a 12:00 PM meet.
