No. 4 Men’s Fencing Defeats Wagner and Wheaton in NFC Finale

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The No. 4 MIT men's fencing team wrapped up Northeast Fencing Conference (NFC) action by defeating Wagner College (16-11) and Wheaton College (21-6) but dropped a 25-2 decision to Boston College at Brown University on Sunday. First-year Alec Zhang (Saratoga, Calif.) powered the epee contingent with a 4-2 record while first-year Zachary Tong (Marietta, Ga.) paced the sabre squad with a 6-3 total. Senior Richard Lin (Melville, N.Y.) and junior Niles Liu (Bedford, Mass.) both went 4-5 for the foil team.

HOW IT HAPPENED – EPEE:
  • The epee squad had 14-13 record, highlighted by a 9-0 score against Wheaton and a 5-4 performance versus Wagner.
  • Zhang claimed all three bouts against Wheaton and notched a 1-2 ledger versus Wagner, resulting in his 4-2 record.
  • First-year Rishi Shiv (Houston, Texas) generated a 5-4 total, including a 2-1 outing versus Wagner and all three bouts against Wheaton.
  • Senior Patrick Xinyi Liu (Brookline, Mass.) picked up three wins against Wheaton.
  • Sophomore Max Zhu (Diamond Bar, Calif.) posted a 2-1 mark versus Wagner, helping him finish with a 2-4 record.
  • In his only appearance of the day, senior Wilson Zhu (Diamond Bar, Calif.) fell to all three of his opponents from BC. 
HOW IT HAPPENED – FOIL:
  • The foil team went 10-17 on the day, including a 6-3 decision against Wagner.
  • Niles Liu swept his opponents from Wagner en route to a 4-5 record.
  • Lin's 2-1 performance versus Wagner helped him finish with a 4-5 mark.
  • Sophomore Michael Samuel (Philadelphia, Pa.) produced 1-2 outings against Wagner and Wheaton for a 2-4 record.
  • Sophomore Andy Zhang (Suwanee, Ga.) lost his three bouts to BC. 
HOW IT HAPPENED – SABRE:
  • The sabre team amassed an 18-9 record, highlighted by a 9-0 margin versus Wheaton and a 5-4 victory over Wagner.
  • Tong's 6-3 record included a 2-1 performance versus Wagner and 3-0 showing against Wheaton.
  • Senior Henry Smith (Columbia Falls, Mont.) picked up three victories versus Wheaton as he finished 3-1 on the day.
  • First-year Alec Wang (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) also captured three wins from Wheaton en route to a 3-2 ledger.
  • Junior Surya Sakhamuri (Sharon, Mass.) won both of his bouts against Wagner, resulting in a 2-3 final tally.
  • Senior Alex Harris (New York, N.Y.) rounded out the squad with a 1-3 record, including a 1-2 showing versus Wagner.
