No. 3 Women's Soccer Advances to NEWMAC Semifinals With 2-1 Win Over Coast Guard

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The No. 3 MIT women's soccer team, the top seed in the tournament, advanced to the NEWMAC Championship Semifinals with a 2-1 win over eight-seed Coast Guard on Tuesday afternoon on Roberts Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED: 
  • Senior Ashley English (Sheboygan, Wis.) sent a pass from the far side of the field to the front of the goal where senior Meagan Rowlett (Dana Point, Calif.) laced a looping shot from just inside the 15-yard line into the goal just 37 seconds into the match.
  • Coast Guard tied the match in the 12th minute when senior Riley Vicinanzo (Vestavia Hills, Ala.) tipped a pass to sophomore Lulu Vlases (Bozeman, Mont. ) whose shot went past a diving Maddy Noll (Northbrook, Ill.) into the far corner of the net.
  • English gave the Engineers the lead for good at 14:52 when she collected a loose ball in front of the net and powered a shot into the back of the net.
  • MIT looked to add to their lead in the second half with ten shots on goal, but the Bears and keeper Emily Scharnitzky (Charleston, S.C.) held the Engineers scoreless.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 
  • Rowlett has eight goals on the season and is six points shy of tying the program record.
  • English notched her third goal of the season and fifth assist.
  • Noll improved to 10-0 on the season with two saves.
  • Scharnitzky made 12 stops for Coast Guard.

  • MIT will welcome four-seed Babson to Roberts Field for semifinal action on Thursday, November 7 at 7:00 PM.
