Game Recap: Field Hockey |

No. 17 Field Hockey Falls to No. 7 Babson, 3-0, in NEWMAC Championship

BABSON PARK, Mass. – Nationally ranked No. 17 and No. 2 seeded MIT fell to top-seeded No. 7 Babson College, 3-0, in the NEWMAC Field Hockey Championship on Saturday at MacDowell Field. This was the Engineers' eighth straight appearance in the title game and the seventh time in eight seasons they faced the Beavers.

THE BASICS:
  • Score: No. 7 Babson 3, No. 17 MIT 0
  • Records: No. 17 MIT (14-5 Overall); No. 7 Babson (18-3 Overall)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Babson opened the scoring on a penalty corner five minutes into the game. Senior Ellie Powers (Bethlehem, Pa.) took the insertion from graduate student Andrea Marguerite (Hopkinton, Mass.) and pushed a pass to senior Berit Sharrow (Denver, Colo.) on the left side. Sharrow unloaded a low shot through traffic in front of the goal and off an MIT defender into the back of the cage.
  • Both teams had two penalty corners the rest of the period and one more each to start the second quarter but was unable to convert. Recipients of a penalty corner with 1.5 seconds remaining before halftime, Powers sent another pass to Sharrow on the left, and her shot was deflected in front by Reed into the goal to give the Beavers a 2-0 lead.
  • Neither squad was able to muster any offense the first 10 minutes of the third quarter until junior Caroline DiGiovanni (Harwich, Mass.) struck for Babson with four minutes to go in the period. She dribbled the ball down the left side and along the end line before snapping a shot past sophomore goalie Maeve Zimmer (Rockville, Md.) inside the near post.
  • The Engineers generated some momentum during the final four minutes of the frame, creating five penalty corners and producing six shots. Three of the shots were blocked by the Babson defense and attempts by senior Ashley Lederman (Villanova, Pa.) and junior Marisa Montione (Charlotte, N.C.) were turned away by senior goalie Bayla Furmanek (State College, Pa.).
  • The Beavers controlled the action in the fourth quarter as they had a 4-1 edge in shots and a 6-1 margin in penalty corners.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Zimmer generated five saves while Furmanek notched two saves.
  • Babson ended the day with advantages in shots (11-9), shots on goal (8-2), and penalty corners (12-9).
UP NEXT:
  • MIT now awaits word on a possible at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. The complete field will be announced in a selection show on Sunday, November 10 at 9:30 PM Eastern at www.ncaa.com.
