Comeback Attempt Falls Short as Brandeis Holds Off Women's Basketball, 67-59

WALTHAM, Mass. – The MIT women's basketball team came within five points with 6:08 left to play but it would not get any closer as Brandeis University pulled away for a 67-59 win on Tuesday night. Senior Kamsi Nwogu (Algonquin, Ill.) paced the Engineers with 13 points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds for her third double-double of the season.

THE BASICS:

  • Records: MIT (2-5 Overall); Brandeis (4-4 Overall)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • In a tightly played opening quarter, a three pointer by senior Elise Harvey (Wayland, Mass.) trimmed MIT's deficit to 22-19 with 20 seconds left.
  • The Engineers scored the first five points of the second stanza as a layup by Nwogu resulted in a 24-22 lead at the 5:56 mark. Almost a minute later, a jumper by Brandeis sparked a 16-4 run which gave it a 38-28 advantage at halftime.
  • The Judges controlled the action for most of the third quarter as their lead grew to 51-31 with 2:26 on the clock. Sparked by a layup from Nwogu, MIT went on an 8-2 run to wrap up the frame.
  • The Engineers carried the momentum into the fourth quarter as nine unanswered points, capped by a layup from first-year Libi Matityahoo (Yehud Monosson, Israel), narrowed the gap to 53-48 with 6:08 remaining. This was as close as it would get as Brandeis replied with its own nine-point spurt en route to the 67-59 victory.
