SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Springfield took the lead with just over 10 minutes left in the second half and did not relinquish it as the Pride defeated the MIT men's basketball team 83-75 in both teams' first NEWMAC contest of the season on Wednesday night at Blake Arena.
The Engineers saw three players score in double-figures led by senior
Spencer Lin (Menlo Park, Calif.) and sophomore
Isaac Dobie (Kitty Hawk, N.C.) with 22 points in the contest.
THE BASICS:
- Score: Springfield 83, MIT 75
- Records: Springfield (2-4, 1-0 NEWMAC), MIT (4-4 Overall 0-1 NEWMAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The two teams played a tightly contested first half as MIT held the largest lead at three points. Sophomore Xoren Livingston (Wayland, Mass.) led the Pride with nine points while Dobie led the Engineers with 11.
- Senior Josh Hartley (Brooklyn, N.Y.) tied the game at 27 with a layup at 5:05, but two free throws by junior Rome Delgado-Gonzalez (Miami, Fla.) put MIT back in front. Hartley tied the game again with a layup with 44 seconds left before a three from Lin gave MIT a 34-21 halftime lead.
- Senior Kade Killeen (Austin, Texas) hit a three to give the Engineers a 42-41 lead, but the Pride used a 6-0 run to build a 47-42 advantage. Delgado-Gonzalez hit a three to get MIT to within two, but back-to-back Springfield layups gave the hosts a 51-45 lead.
- The Engineers went on a 6-0 run to tie the game at 51, but the Pride used a 7-2 run to build a 58-53 lead with 10:02 remaining.
- Springfield did not relinquish the lead and held on for the 83-75 win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Dobie has scored in double figures in all but one game this season. He has recorded four games of 20 or more points. He also grabbed a season-best eight rebounds in the contest.
- Lin and Delgado-Gonzalez both scored season-bests as Lin had 22 points and Delgado-Gonzalez finished with 16.
- Junior Parker Spann (Omaha, Neb.) grabbed a team-high nine rebounds for MIT.
- Livingston was one of three Pride players in double figures as he poured in 23 points led Hartley added 17 points while graduate student Jarron Flynn (Roslindale, Mass.) scored 19.
UP NEXT:
- MIT continues conference play on Saturday, December 7 when the Engineers welcome Wheaton to Rockwell Cage for a 2:00 PM contest. The Pride welcomes Emmanuel to Blake Arena for a Saturday non-conference game at 1:00 PM.
