CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The No. 3 MIT women's swimming and diving opened day one of the MIT Winter Invitational with the 800-free relay team posting the fastest time in Division III this season and setting a new school and pool record. 

HOW IT HAPPENED:  

800 Free Relay 

• The Engineers claimed the top two spots in the event. 
• MIT's 'A' relay team of graduate student Alexandra Turvey (Vancouver, B.C.), sophomore Sydney Smith (Atlanta, Ga.), senior Kate Augustyn (Eau Claire, Wis.), and sophomore Ella Roberson (Midland, Mich.) shattered the school record as they clocked in with a time of 7:18.87. 
• Junior Natalie Tang (Allen, Texas), first year Sarah Bernard (Brookline, Mass.), first year Jessie Crane (Katonah, N.Y.), and first year Belise Swartwood (Honolulu, Hawaii) finished in second place with a time of 7:33.07. This time ranks fifth in Division III. 

1650 Free 

• First year Lauren Adler (Ann Arbor, Mich.) led the Engineers in the event with her second-place finish with a time of 17:25.42. Sophomore Camila Pierce (Raleigh, N.C.) finished in fifth with a time of 17:53.78. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

• Both relay teams achieved NCAA B Cut times with both times clocking in faster than last year's invited times. 
• Adler fell just short of the NCAA B Cut time of 17:21.20. 

UP NEXT:  

• MIT kicks off day two of the Winter Invite, tomorrow, Saturday December 7 with the prelims at 10:00 AM. Diving will follow at 12:30 PM with the finals kicking off at 6:00 PM.
