WALTHAM, Mass. – In its final competition of the semester, the No. 4 MIT men's fencing team defeated No. 6 Drew University (23-4) and No. 8 Lawrence University (22-5) but fell to No. 8 (D1) St. John's University (17-10), Cornell University (15-12), and No. 9 (D1) Yale University (18-9) at the Brandeis Invitational on Sunday. HOW IT HAPPENED – EPEE:
- The epee squad compiled a 20-25 record, highlighted by a 6-3 score versus Lawrence and a 5-4 result against Drew.
- Shiv's 8-4 total featured a sweep of his opponents from Drew and 2-1 performances against Cornell and Lawrence.
- Senior Patrick Xinyi Liu (Brookline, Mass.) posted a 7-5 record as he won all three bouts versus Lawrence and went 2-1 versus Drew.
- First-year Alec Zhang (Saratoga, Calif.) finished with a 3-12 ledger with his victories coming against Cornell, Yale, and Lawrence.
- In his only outing of the day, graduate student Timmy Dang (San Francisco, Calif.) went 1-2 against Cornell.
- Senior Wilson Zhu (Diamond Bar, Calif.) posted a 1-2 mark versus St. John's in his lone appearance.
HOW IT HAPPENED – FOIL:
- The foil team generated a 30-15 record, including 9-0 decisions against Drew and Lawrence as well as a 5-4 mark versus Cornell.
- Andy Zhang defeated all three of his opponents from Drew and Lawrence while going 2-1 versus St. John's, Cornell, and Yale.
- Senior Richard Lin (Melville, N.Y.) won five of his six bouts as he picked up three wins against Drew and two versus Lawrence.
- Junior Niles Liu (Bedford, Mass.) went 6-5, highlighted by a 3-0 outing versus Lawrence and a 2-1 tally against Cornell.
- Junior Henry Zhang (Scarsdale, N.Y.) swept his bouts against Drew and earned a win versus St. John's en route to a 4-3 record.
- Junior Tony Xiao (San Ramon, Calif.) picked up victories against Cornell, Yale, and Lawrence, helping him finish with a 3-3 ledger.
HOW IT HAPPENED – SABRE:
- The sabre team produced a 26-19 ledger which featured a 9-0 result versus Drew and a 7-2 score against Lawrence.
- Wang's 8-4 total included two wins against St. John's, Drew, and Lawrence while also defeating an opponent from Cornell and Yale.
- Junior Surya Sakhamuri (Sharon, Mass.) finished with a 6-4 record as he topped both of his opponents from Drew, went 2-1 against St. John's, and claimed a victory versus Cornell and Yale.
- First-year Zachary Tong (Marietta, Ga.) generated a 7-6 ledger with 3-0 outings against Drew and Lawrence and a win in his only bout versus Yale.
- Senior Alex Harris (New York, N.Y.) had a 3-3 record as he went 1-0 against Drew, Cornell, and Lawrence.
- Senior Henry Smith (Columbia Falls, Mont.) notched victories versus Drew and Lawrence en route to a 2-2 tally.
