More Records Fall for No. 3 Women's Swim and Dive On Day Two of the MIT Invite

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. –  The No. 3 MIT women's swimming and diving team set three more school records to cap another strong day of swimming and diving at the MIT Winter Invitational on Saturday night at the Zesiger Center Pool.  

The Engineers currently sit first overall with 988.5 points with Tufts in second with 815.5 points, and RPI in third with 438 points. 

HOW IT HAPPENED:  

3-Meter Diving 

  • MIT swept the podium in the event led by sophomore Fiora Beratahani (San Jose, Calif.) with a score of 502.60.  
  • Senior Rachel Loh (Arcadia, Calif.) finished in second place with a score of 469.50 followed by junior Emma Scott (Belmont, Calif.) with a mark of 466.95. 

200 Free Relay 

  • MIT took the top two spots led by the 'A' relay team of graduate student Alexandra Turvey (Vancouver, B.C.), junior Annika Naveen (Wynnewood, Pa.), sophomore Sydney Smith (Atlanta, Ga.) and sophomore Ella Roberson (Midland, Mich.), who's anchor leg time of 22.10 completed the win for the Engineers in a pool and school record time of 1:31.06.  
  • Sophomore Kailey Simons (Williston Park, N.Y.), senior Kate Augustyn (Eau Claire, Wis.), first year Rachel Yang (San Diego, Calif.), and first year Olivia Chen (Plano, Texas) took second with a time of 1:34.14.  

200 Fly 

  • First year Belise Swartwood (Honolulu, Hawaii) won the event with a time of 2:02.54. The time is currently the fourth fastest in Division III. 

200 Free 

  • The Engineers claimed the top-three spots led by Roberson who finished just shy of breaking her school record in the event as she clocked in at 1:49.27. 
  • Augustyn finished in second place (1:49.79) followed by Smith in third with a time of 1:51.02. 

100 Breast 

  • First year Sarah Bernard (Brookline, Mass.) took the top spot with a time of 1:02.42, which is the second-fastest time in program history.  

100 Back 

  • Smith won the event in 54.92 followed by senior Iris Yang (Seattle, Wash.) in second with a time of 55.32.  

400 IM 

  • Bernard won the event with a school record time of 4:19.58.  
  • First year Jessica Crane (Katonah, N.Y.) finished third with the second-fastest time in program history (4:26.49) followed by first year Lauren Adler (Ann Arbor, Mich.) in fourth with a time of 4:26.54.  

50 Free

  • Roberson broke her own school record as she took first in 22.91, which is also a new pool record. Turvey swam the third fastest time in program history (23.27).

400 Medley Relay 

  • MIT continued to dominate the relays as the team of Augustyn, Bernard, Turvey, and Roberson concluded day two with a win as they clocked in at 3:40.76.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

  • MIT set three school records.  
  • The 200-Free relay team now holds the fastest time in DIII this season.  
  • Roberson ranks third in the country in the 200-free and 50-free.
  • Bernard holds the fastest time in the 400 IM, and the fourth fastest time in the 100-breast in DIII.  
  • Smith swam the third fastest time in the 100-back. 
  • All three divers hit NCAA qualifying marks. 

UP NEXT:  

  • The Engineers wrap up the MIT Winter Invite tomorrow, Sunday, December 8 with prelims starting at 10:00 AM. Diving will begin at 12:30 PM with finals of the swim events starting at 6:00 PM.
