No. 3 Women’s Swim & Dive Claims MIT Invite Title to Conclude Record Breaking Weekend

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. –  The No. 3 MIT women's swimming and diving team captured the 2024 MIT Invitational title on Sunday evening at the Zesiger Center Pool, setting more pool and program records to conclude an outstanding weekend for the Engineers. 

Sophomore Ella Roberson (Midland, Mich.) played a part in three record breaking performances, racing in both relays while breaking her own program record in the 100 Free. 

THE BASICS:   

  • Final Team Standings: 1. MIT (1,944.50); 2. Tufts (1,602.50); 3. RPI (760); 4. Simmons (279); Wellesley (263); 5. Emory (157)  

HOW IT HAPPENED:  

1-Meter Diving 

  • Just as they did in the 3-Meter event on Saturday, sophomore Fiora Beratahani (San Jose, Calif.) and senior Rachel Loh (Arcadia, Calif.) finished 1-2 for MIT on the 1-Meter Board. 
  • Beratahani recorded an 11-Dive score of 489.95 to win the event, while Loh was the runner-up for MIT with a score of 471.05. 

200 Medley Relay 

  • The MIT 'A' Relay of senior Kate Augustyn (Eau Claire, Wis.), first year Sarah Bernard (Brookline, Mass.), junior Annika Naveen (Wynnewood, Pa.), and Roberson outpaced the Tufts 'A' and 'B' Relays with a pool record time of 1:40.44. 
  • MIT's 'B' relay of first year Olivia Chen (Plano, Texas), sophomore Kailey Simons (Williston Park, N.Y.), junior Lauren Levy (Amherst, N.Y.) and first year Lillian Poag (Houston, Texas) tied the Jumbos 'B' squad with a matching time of 1:44.88. 

500 Free 

  • First year Jessica Crane (Katonah, N.Y.) recorded a B-Cut for MIT with a runner-up time of 5:07.25. First year Mary Feliz (Millersville, Md.) was third, finishing in 5:04.66. 

200 Back 

  • Augustyn returned to the top of the podium in the 200 Back, winning the event in 2:00.03. MIT had three of the top five in the event, as Iris Yang was fourth (2:03.93) and Chen was fifth (2:04.57).  

100 Fly

  • Sophomore Sydney Smith (Atlanta, Ga.) set a new program record in the 100 Fly, leading a 1-2-3 MIT sweep of the event. Graduate student Alexandra Turvey (Vancouver, B.C.), and first year Belise Swartwood (Honolulu, Hawaii) finished in second and third. 
  • Smith won in 54.89 seconds, with Turvey taking second in 55.02 and Swartwood third in 56.01.  

200 Breast 

  • Bernard had the top time in the 200 Breast, winning the event in a program record time of 2:13.89. 
  • Quinci Wheeler of Tufts was the runner-up in the event, but MIT first year Lauren Adler (Ann Arbor, Mich.) and sophomore Anna Li (Boyds, Md.) took third and fourth with near matching times. Adler finished in 2:23.03, with Li recording a time of 2:23.04. 

100 Free 

  • Roberson kept the momentum going for the Engineers with a pool record of 49.52. 
  • The time also lowered Roberson's own program record in the event.  

200 IM 

  • Smith put down an NCAA B-Cut to win the 200 IM in 2:05.58.  
  • Crane followed her teammate in 2:07.27 to give MIT the top two spots in the event.  

400 Free Relay

  • The Engineers completed a record-breaking weekend with another record-breaking performance, as the MIT 'A' relay of Turvey, Roberson, Augustyn and Smith set a new pool and program record with a time of 3:22.31.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

  • The top 15 divers on the 1-Meter board posted scores over 395.00, earning NCAA Regional qualifying scores.  
  • The 200 Medley Relay, Augustyn's time in the 200 Back, Smith and Turvey in the 100 Fly, Bernard in the 200 Breast, Roberson in the 100 Free, and the 400 Free Relay were all times below the 2024 invited NCAA times. 
  • Augustyn's time in the 200 Back is the third fastest time in NCAA Division III this season.  
  • Smith's 100 Fly time is currently in the top five nationally. 
  • Bernard's time in the 200 Breast and Roberson's mark in 100 Free are both the second fastest in the nation in their respective events. 
  • The 400 Free Relay's time of 3:22.31 is the top time in Division III this season.  

UP NEXT:  

  • MIT heads into the winter break and will return to the pool on Friday, January 10 for a 6:00 PM meet against Boston University at the Zesiger Center Pool.
