The Lead: MIT outscored Salve Regina University, 20-5, during the first five minutes of the fourth quarter, helping it pull away and capture an 89-73 victory in the NEWMAC women's basketball regular-season finale for both teams on Saturday. Junior
Angie Choi (Cypress, Calif.) led all players with a career-high 27 points while also grabbing two steals.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- In a back-and-forth opening frame, a three pointer by sophomore
Kaya Weiser (Villanova, Pa.) with 14 seconds left gave MIT a 21-18 edge.
Â
- The close play continued in the second quarter as Salve Regina tied the score twice, the second time at 30 with 4:47 on the clock. A free throw by junior
Kamsi Nwogu (Algonquin, Ill.) during the Engineers' next possession and then a trey from Choi at the 3:21 mark gradually started a 17-2 run that gave MIT a comfortable 47-32 margin at halftime.
Â
- The Seahawks chipped away at the deficit as two free throws brought them within 60-57 with 2:16 remaining in the third quarter. The Engineers responded with a three by Choi during their next trip down the court and then graduate student
Christina Antonakakis (Holmdel, N.J.) drained two free throws with four seconds left to create some breathing room.
Â
- MIT carried the momentum into the fourth quarter as it generated its pivotal 20-5 run that put the game out of reach.
Â
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Â
- Antonakakis produced 19 points and three assists while Nwogu tallied 15 points, 10 rebounds, three steals, and one block. Sophomore
Alice Hall (Ambler, Pa.) notched nine rebounds and two blocks as junior
Elise Harvey (Wayland, Mass.) posted seven rebounds, one block, and one steal. Weiser finished with eight points while senior
Grace Harrington (Seattle, Wash.) collected six rebounds and three assists.
Â
- The Engineers ended the day with advantages in rebounds (49-38) and second-chance points (21-12) while Salve Regina had the upper hand in points off turnovers (12-9), points in the paint (36-22), fastbreak points (14-7), and bench scoring (29-17).
Â
- This was the first meeting between both programs since 2002-03 and MIT's first win since 2000-01. The Engineers are now 3-5 all-time against the Seahawks.
