Men's Volleyball Upsets No. 17 Misericordia in Four Sets; Sweeps Emerson

THE BASICS:
 
- Scores: MIT 3, No. 17 Misericordia University 1 (22-25, 37-35, 25-19, 25-21)
MIT 3, Emerson 0 (25-22, 25-11, 25-23)
 
- Records: MIT (8-5); No. 17 Misericordia (13-5); Emerson (2-8)

- The Lead: The MIT men's volleyball team defeated No. 17 Misericordia University in a four-set battle and followed that with a 3-0 sweep of Emerson on Saturday afternoon at Rockwell Cage.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED – MATCH ONE vs. No. 17 Misericordia University
 
- Set 1: The Engineers and Cougars played a tight-knit set with 10 ties and four lead changes. The Cougars took advantage of an error and built a four-point lead before securing the 25-22 win.
 
- Set 2: The second set was a back-and-forth affair with 24 ties and eight lead changes. Trailing 35-34, MIT capitalized on two Misericordia errors, and a kill by junior Grant Oh (Irvine, Calif.) captured the 37-35 win.
 
- Set 3: Tied 9-9, MIT took advantage of a Misericordia error and racked up a four-point lead thanks to two kills and a block by graduate student Jay Goettman (McLean, Va.). MIT went on to win the set 25-19.
 
- Set 4: MIT jumped out to a quick 6-2 lead on a kill from Goetmann. An error from the Cougars and two kills from graduate student Nick Gustafson (San Diego, Calif.), made it a 15-10 lead for the Engineers. Kills by Goettman and Gustafson clinched the 25-21 victory for MIT.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
- Gustafson led all players with 21 kills in addition to generating six digs. Oh produced 16 kills and a .343 hitting performance as Goettman finished with 12 kills and six blocks. Senior Max Turner (Chandler, Ariz.) totaled 53 assists and 10 digs. Defensively, sophomore Kevin Windisch (Placentia, Calif.) totaled eight digs, and sophomore Michael Rini (Huntington Beach, Calif.) posted four blocks.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED – MATCH TWO vs. Emerson:
 
- Set 1: MIT came out strong in the first set. An ace by Windisch gave MIT an 11-5 lead, but the Lions used an error to close the gap to 11-6. The Engineers took advantage of Emerson's errors, capturing a 25-22 win.
 
- Set 2: With MIT up 13-8, the Engineers scored five straight points to take an 18-8 lead. MIT defeated Emerson 25-11, thanks to an ace by first year Jensen Fiskin (Palm Desert, Calif.) and an error by Emerson.
 
- Set 3: MIT used a three-point run to make it 10-6 due to errors by the Lions. With MIT needing one point for the win, Emerson went on a 4-0 run to make it a 24-23 MIT lead, but an attacking error gave the Engineers the 25-23 win.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
- Windisch led all players with 11 kills and had six digs. Senior Phillip Johnson (Chandler, Ariz.) garnered four kills and junior Riley Oh (Irvine, Calif.) recorded 35 assists and five digs. Rini recorded four kills and had six blocks and three digs. Defensively, sophomore George Chang (Winter Springs, Fla.) tallied 11 digs and junior Nathan Levandoske (Harvey, La.) went on to collect five digs and six blocks and also had nine kills.
