The Lead: A five-point burst during the final 33 seconds of the second quarter created enough of a cushion as the MIT women's basketball team went on to defeat the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, 72-59, in NEWMAC action on Saturday afternoon. Graduated student
Christina Antonakakis (Holmdel, N.J.) led the Engineers with a game-high 25 points to go along with three assists.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- A three-point play by junior
Kamsi Nwogu (Algonquin, Ill.) kicked off a 10-2 run that resulted in a 12-6 lead for MIT with 4:09 left in the opening frame. Coast Guard battled back as it trimmed the Engineers' margin to 16-15 at the end of the quarter.
Â
- The second stanza was closely played as a jumper by sophomore
Alice Hall (Ambler, Pa.) increased MIT's lead to 36-29 with 1:26 left. The Bears drained a pair of free throws, but the Engineers replied with a three-pointer from junior
Elise Harvey (Wayland, Mass.) and a layup by Antonakakis at the buzzer to enter halftime with a 10-point advantage.
Â
- MIT's double-digit lead held for most of the third quarter as its margin grew to 14 points on two occasions, the last at 53-39 courtesy of a jumper by junior
Olivia Joseph (Newtown Square, Pa.) at the 3:47 mark. The scoring was balanced during the remainder of the frame as a Coast Guard layup moved the score to 57-46 with 26 seconds remaining.
Â
- The Engineers generated a 13-5 run during the first half of the fourth quarter, putting the game out of reach. Antonakakis accounted for nine points while Nwogu had four.
Â
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
