Softball Opens Florida Trip with Wins Over Colby and Elmhurst

Records: No. 17 MIT (4-0), Colby (3-4), Elmhurst (6-8)

Location: Clermont, Fla.

The Lead: The No. 17 MIT softball team opened their Florida trip with two victories as they outscored their opponents 14-1 in their two wins.

HOW IT HAPPENED vs. COLBY

- Colby got on the board quickly with an RBI triple in the top of the first, but the Engineers responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame.
 
- Junior Mikayla Cable (Valrico, Fla.) singled home a run in the second and knocked in the fourth MIT run of the day with a double in the fourth.
 
- Junior Kennedy Adkison (San Jose, Calif.) knocked in Cable in the fourth, and MIT tacked on another in the sixth.
 
- Sophomore Caroline Langmeyer (Upper Arlington, Ohio) retired the Mules in order to seal the 6-1 win.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Langmeyer moved to 2-0 as she went the fill seven and scattered three hits. She walked one and struck out nine.
 
- Cable led the way for MIT with two hits, two runs scored, and two RBI.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED vs. ELMHURST

- First year Arianna Kumar (San Diego, Calif.) knocked in the first two MIT runs with a single to right in the first.
 
- Sophomore Kara Hines (Cynthiana, Ky.) singled home the third Engineer run in the second and scored on a triple by Adkison.
 
- Kumar tripled home classmate Nicole Johnston (St. Charles, Ill.) and came around to score the sixth run of the day on a sacrifice fly from junior Becca O'Connor (San Antonio, Texas).

- Kumar hit her second triple of the day in the fourth to plate junior Mackenzie Bivin (San Diego, Calif.) and Adkison as the Engineers earned the 8-0 win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- O'Connor got her second win with four innings of shutout ball. She allowed just four hits and struck out one. Sophomore Nicole Doering (St. Louis Park, Min.) tossed the last inning and struck out one.
 
- Kumar finished 3-3 with five RBI. Adkison also went a perfect 3-3 at the plate.
 
UP NEXT:

-  The Engineers are back in action tomorrow with a 10 am contest against Kalamazoo followed by a 12:30 game against Colby.
