No. 16 Women’s Tennis Falls to No. 1 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 5-4

THE BASICS:
 
- Score: No. 1 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 5, No. 16 MIT 4

- The Lead: The No. 16 MIT women's tennis team fell to No. 1 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 5-4, on Friday afternoon.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
- Senior Kimberly Liao (Commack, N.Y.) and junior Jay Lu (Austin, Texas) fell to Nikolina Batoshvili and Alisha Chulani, 8-1, in the top doubles spot but sophomores Alaina Kolli (Buffalo Grove, Ill.) and Artemis Pados (Delray Beach, Calif.) defeated Ella Brissett and Lindsay Eisenman, 8-2, to even the match for MIT. CMS went ahead after Sena Selby and Audrey Yoon battled first-years Anastasia Samets (Ocean, N.J.) and Saina Deshpande (Pune, India) for an 8-5 victory in the No. 3 slot.
 
- The Athenas increased their lead to 4-1 after Yoon defeated Liao, 6-0, 6-2 in the No. 2 singles position and Selby topped Kolli, 6-2, 6-3, in the No. 4 spot. The Engineers responded with victories in the No. 5 and No. 6 slots as Deshpande and Samets both recorded 6-3, 6-2 decisions against Brissett and Batoshvili, respectively. CMS clinched the match when Jade Haller outlasted Lu, 7-5, 7-5, in the No. 3 position. First-year Katya Shepherd Johnson (Takoma Park, Md.) picked up MIT's final point by defeating Eisenman, 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (6), in the top spot.
