No. 17 Women’s Tennis Earns 9-0 Road Shutout at Smith

THE BASICS:

- Scores: No. 17 MIT - 9, Smith - 0

- The Lead: The No. 17 MIT women's tennis team earned a 9-0 victory in NEWMAC action over Smith College on Tuesday afternoon in Northampton, Mass.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- MIT won
all three of its doubles matches with the first victory of the day coming from first-years Anastasia Samets (Ocean, N.J.) and Saina Deshpande (Pune, India) as they took No. 3 doubles, 8-1 over Miranda Gibson and Sabrina Wang. Junior Jay Lu (Austin, Texas) and senior Kimberly Liao (Commack, N.Y.) followed with an 8-4 win in the top slot against Clara Goshgarian and Lili Goshgarian. Sophomores Alaina Kolli (Buffalo Grove, Ill.) and Artemis Pados (Delray Beach, Fla.) ended doubles with an 8-3 victory against Ayla Hauser and Marielle Sauber in the No. 2 spot.

- Lu opened
singles matches with a decisive 6-1, 6-2 win against C. Goshgarian in the No. 2 position followed by Kolli earning a 6-1, 6-1 win over L. Goshgarian in the No. 3 slot. In the No. 4 position, Deshpande notched a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Aranne Jung while first-year Katya Shepherd Johnson (Takoma Park, Md.) registered a 6-2, 6-0 decision over Hauser in the top spot.

- First-year Sophia Min (Naples, Fla.) clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-3 win in the No. 6 slot over Dayana Caluna. First-year Nishi Gandra (Mason, Ohio) wrapped up the day in the No. 5 position with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Wang.
