Score: No. 8 RPI 19, MIT 10

Records: MIT (1-3); RPI (7-0)

Location: Troy, N.Y. (Renwyck Field)

The Lead: An eight goal third-quarter surge gave RPI enough of a cushion to pull away from MIT, eventually capturing a 19-10 victory in a non-conference men's lacrosse game on Saturday afternoon. Seniors Heath Nilsen (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Jack McCordic (Medfield, Mass.) as well as sophomore Zach Bleil (New Canaan, Conn.) each scored two goals for MIT.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- Junior Nick Stiles (New Canaan, Conn.) scored the first goal of the game in 35 seconds, however, RPI went on to generate six goals in the opening frame. Sophomore Garrett Campagna (Lancaster, Pa.) would also chip in a goal in the period.

- In the second quarter, both teams produced two goals which resulted in an 8-4 score at halftime. McCordic and sophomore Bryce Metalios (Old Greenwich, Conn.) converted their goals on man-up opportunities with Campagna earning assists on both.

- RPI broke away from MIT in the third quarter, as it outscored the visitors, 8-3, establishing a 16-7 advantage.

- Both teams posted three goals in the final period, giving RPI the 19-10 victory over MIT. Senior Joe Lupo (Bedford, N.H.), Bleil, and Nilsen all scored unassisted goals.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Campagna collected four assists and a goal for five points. Junior Matthew Sardis (Bernardsville, N.J.) won 10 of 21 face-off opportunities while also collecting six groundballs. Senior Luke Chapman (Houston, Texas) corralled five groundballs as first-year Stone Smith (Roswell, Ga.) and junior Brennan Hoppa (Hampstead, N.H.) both recorded three groundballs and two caused turnovers.

- In net, graduate student David Vapnek (San Diego, Calif.) played all 60 minutes and produced nine saves for the Engineers.
