Men's Volleyball Defeats Buffalo St. and Regis

The Lead: The MIT men's volleyball team defeated Buffalo State in four sets and followed up with a 3-0 sweep of Regis on Saturday afternoon at Rockwell Cage.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED – MATCH ONE vs. Buffalo State
 
- Set 1The Engineers and Bengals played a nail-biting set, that had seven ties. Trailing 24-23, three straight kills for MIT would give the Engineers a set victory, 26-24.
 
- Set 2: The second set was another back-and-forth affair with eight ties. Trailing 23-21, Buffalo State took advantage of an MIT service error and scored four straight points to win the set 25-21.

- Set 3: MIT jumped to a 12-3 lead and never looked back as they took control of the set and eventually won it 25-15.
 
- Set 4: The Bengals took a quick 5-1 lead in the set, but in the middle of the set, the Engineers went on a 6-0 run and 4-0 run to pull away and win the set 25-16.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
- Graduate student Nick Gustafson (San Diego, Calif.) led the match with 18 kills and had seven digs. Junior Grant Oh (Irvine, Calif.) produced 14 kills and a .414 hitting performance with eight digs and four total blocks. First-year Ryan Espinoza (Los Angeles, Calif.) finished with 10 kills on a .409 hitting percentage and eight digs. Sophomore Kevin Windisch (Placentia, Calif.) collected eight digs. Junior Riley Oh (Irvine, Calif.) led the match with 45 assists and chipped in six digs.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED – MATCH TWO vs. Regis:
 
- Set 1: MIT took a quick 5-0 lead in the opening set and led throughout, taking the first set victory 25-19.

- Set 2: This set was an intense back-and-forth battle with 16 ties between the two teams. With the Engineers leading 24-23, a kill from Grant Oh gave the second set victory, 25-23.
 
- Set 3: The Pride and the Engineers were in a tight battle early on and at a 12-12 tie, MIT went on a 4-0 run. Despite the efforts of Regis to try and gain momentum, the Engineers wouldn't allow the match to slip out of their hands as they collected the sweep, 25-20.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
- Grant Oh and senior Phillip Johnson (Chandler, Ariz.) had 13 and 12 kills for the Engineers, respectively. Johnson would collect a .579 hitting percentage. Sophomore Michael Rini (Huntington Beach, Calif.), Gustafson, and Espinoza each had seven kills. Riley Oh had a match-high 37 assists and collected 10 digs. Windisch and Gustafson had nine and six digs, respectively.
