The Lead: The No. 12 MIT women's tennis team earned an 8-1 victory over No. 30 Hamilton College on Saturday morning at the J.B. Carr Tennis Bubble.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- MIT won two of three doubles matches with the first victory of the day coming first-years
Saina Deshpande (Pune, India) and
Anastasia Samets (Ocean, N.J.) as they took No. 3 doubles, 8-2, over
Priyanka Challapalli and
Shannon Cicero. Sophomores
Alaina Kolli (Buffalo Grove, Ill.) and
Artemis Pados (Delray Beach, Fla.) followed with an 8-3 victory against
Ally Turtledove and
Grace Qian in the No. 2 spot.
Hannah Aspey and
Stephanie Pratt produced the lone point for the Continentals as they outlasted senior
Kimberly Liao (Commack, N.Y.) and junior
Jay Lu (Austin, Texas), 8-6.
- The Engineers did not lose any of their six single matches.
- Lu and Deshpande both earned 6-1, 6-2 wins against Challapalli and Qian in the No. 2 and 4 positions, respectively. Kolli clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-4 win in the No. 3 slot after being down 1-4 in the second set and coming back to win five games in a row. First-year
Katya Shepherd Johnson (Takoma Park, Md.) battled Apsey for a 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 win in the top spot while first-year
Nishi Gandra (Mason, Ohio) wrapped up the day in the No. 6 position with a 6-4, 6-2 win over
Samantha Rainero.
