The Lead: The No. 12 MIT men's volleyball team earned a trip to the UVC semifinals with a 3-1 win over No. 15 Hobart on Friday night at Vassar College. The fourth-seeded Engineers defeated the fifth-seeded Statesmen to advance to their second-straight semifinal appearance.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Â
- Set 1:Â In a set that featured 16 ties and nine lead changes, MIT came out with the 25-22 win. A 5-0 Hobart run put the Statesmen up 15-10, but the Engineers chipped away, and back-to-back kills from graduate student
Nick Gustafson (San Diego, Calif.) gave MIT an 18-17 lead. With the score 22-all, MIT scored the next three points with a kill from junior
Grant Oh (Irvine, Calif.) sealing the win.
Â
- Set 2:Â Down 7-4, Hobart used a 10-3 run to pull ahead 14-10. A kill from senior
Phillip Johnson (Chandler, Ariz.) and an attack error cut the Hobart lead to 19-17, but that is as close as MIT got as Hobart won set two, 25-20.
- Set 3:Â
Andrew Kim gave Hobart a 12-9 lead, but MIT used a 4-0 run punctuated by an Oh ace to take a 13-12 lead. Down 17-15, the Engineers used an 11-5 run, capped by an Oh kill to take set three, 25-22.
- Set 4: Hobart jumped out to a 6-2 lead and held onto the lead until an attacking error tied the match at 23. A kill from Oh game MIT match point and another Hobart error sealed the 25-23 win for the Engineers.
