No. 19 Women’s Tennis Defeats No. 13 Amherst, 6-3

THE BASICS:
 
- Score: No. 19 MIT 6, No. 13 Amherst College 3
 
- Records: MIT (8-3), Amherst (7-4)

- The Lead: The No. 19 MIT women's tennis team defeated No. 13 Amherst College, 6-3, on Friday afternoon. This was the Engineers' second win over the Mammoths in program history as the first occurred during the 2021-22 season.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
- Senior Kimberly Liao (Commack, N.Y.) and first-year Anastasia Samets (Ocean, N.J.) picked up MIT's first point of the day as they defeated Greta Stechschulte and Sophie Diop, 8-1, at No. 3 doubles. Amherst evened the match when Amy Cui and Katie Hart topped junior Jay Lu (Austin, Texas) and first-year Saina Deshpande (Pune, India), 8-6, in the No. 2 spot. The Engineers countered with sophomores Alaina Kolli (Buffalo Grove, Ill.) and Artemis Pados (Delray Beach, Calif.) producing an 8-5 victory over Deliala Charles Friedman and Lily Dounchis in the top slot.
 
- MIT picked up wins in the No. 3, 4, and 2 singles positions to build a 5-1 advantage. Lu and Kolli both had 6-4, 6-2 decisions against Diop and Dounchis in the No. 3 and 4 spots, respectively. Liao then clinched the match with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Cui. Friedman battled first-year Katya Shepherd Johnson (Takoma Park, Md.) for a 6-7 (6), 7-5, 6-0 win in the top slot, but Deshpande cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win against Stechschulte in the No. 5 position. The Mammoths claimed the final point of the match when Karolina Dobiecka outlasted Samets, 7-5, 7-6 (3), in the No. 6 spot.
 
UP NEXT:
 
- Both teams resume conference action this weekend. MIT will travel to NEWMAC rival No. 43 Wellesley College on Saturday, April 13 for a 12:00 p.m. match while Amherst will host NESCAC foe Connecticut College the following day at 12:00 p.m.
