The Lead: The No. 19 MIT women's tennis team picked up its fourth straight win after it defeated No. 43 Wellesley College, 8-1, in NEWMAC action on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Senior
Kimberly Liao (Commack, N.Y.) and first-year
Anastasia Samets (Ocean, N.J.) overpowered
Lily Cade and
Kriti Sarav, 8-0, in the No. 3 doubles position. However, Wellesley's No. 2 tandem of
Emilee Pak and
Susanne Xu defeated junior
Jay Lu (Austin, Texas) and first-year
Saina Deshpande (Pune, India), 8-5, to tie the match. The Engineers took the lead after sophomores
Alaina Kolli (Buffalo Grove, Ill.) and
Artemis Pados (Delray Beach, Calif.) topped
Melinda Alviar and
Annissa Mu, 8-4, in the No. 1 slot.
- MIT carried the momentum into the singles matches as it swept the Blue. Kolli cruised past Cade, 6-1, 6-0, in the No. 4 position while Deshpande defeated
Dalia Khera, 6-2, 6-2, in the No. 5 spot. Samets clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Jennifer Fan in the No. 6 slot as Liao followed with a 6-1, 6-1 decision against
Veda Madhusudan in the No. 2 position. First-year
Katya Shepherd Johnson (Takoma Park, Md.) topped Xu, 6-3, 6-1 in the No. 1 spot as Lu closed out the match with a 6-4, 6-1 win against Sarav in the No. 3 slot.
