No. 17 Women’s Lacrosse Falls to Springfield, 16-15, in Overtime

THE BASICS:

- Score: Springfield College 16, No. 17 MIT 15 (OT)

- Records: MIT (12-3, 6-2 NEWMAC); Springfield (13-2, 8-0 NEWMAC)

- Location: Springfield, Mass. (Stagg Field)

- The Lead: No. 17 MIT rattled off four straight goals to force overtime, however, Springfield College found the back of the net 53 seconds into the extra session to defeat the Engineers, 16-15, in a NEWMAC women's lacrosse game on Wednesday night. Sophomore Ashley Thomas (Summit, N.J.) amassed a game-high seven goals for the visitors.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- MIT opened the game with tallies by first-year Jillian Butler (Brecksville, Ohio) and Thomas during the first 1:37 of action. Springfield responded with four goals, taking a 4-2 edge at the 9:42 mark. The Engineers countered with an 8-1 run as senior Ellie Rabenold's (Cincinnati, Ohio) fifth goal created a 10-5 margin with 7:42 left in the second quarter. The Pride countered with three straight goals to narrow the gap heading into halftime.

- Springfield generated four goals in the first 5:12 of the third quarter, resulting in a 12-10 lead. The score remained unchanged until Thomas redirected a feed from Butler for a player-advantage goal with 5:04 on the clock.

- The Pride put together a three-goal burst, increasing its cushion to 15-11 at the 7: 47 mark of the fourth quarter. Junior Julianne Flusche (Ridgewood, N.J.) collected the ensuing draw which led to Thomas scoring 38 seconds later. Rabenold buried a free-position shot with 4:09 remaining and then Thomas brought MIT within one (15-14) with 2:36 to go. Springfield won the draw but turned the ball over late in the possession clock as sophomore Nina Petulla (Natick, Mass.) collected the groundball. With a player-advantage, Butler set up Thomas for the equalizer with 31 seconds remaining. Petulla corralled the ensuing draw and then a shot by Rabenold right before time expired was saved.

- In overtime, the Pride came up with the draw and netted the game-winner after 53 seconds expired.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Rabenold finished with six goals and three draw controls as Flusche tallied five draw controls, two groundballs, and one caused turnover. Sophomore Monica Petulla (Natick, Mass.) and Butler both posted one goal, two assists, and two groundballs as they added three and two draw controls, respectively. In net, sophomore Molly Dulde (Delafield, Wis.) made four saves in the first quarter while first-year Pauline Vien (Brookline, Mass.) closed out the game with 10 saves.
