The Lead: In the first meeting between both programs since the 2014-15 season, the nationally ranked No. 28 MIT men's tennis team defeated NYU, 5-4, on Friday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Senior
Kailas Kahler (Pawtucket, R.I.) and first-year
Adam Sun (Glendale, Ariz.) cruised to an 8-1 victory over
Cooper Smith and
Zachary Freier in the No. 3 doubles position and then seniors
Joseph Li (Naperville, Ill.) and
Sundeep Chakladar (Redondo Beach, Calif.) outlasted
Louis Frowein and
Jingyuan Chen, 8-6, in the No. 2 spot. NYU picked up its first point of the match when
Boren Zheng and
Alexander Lee defeated graduate student
Daniel Papacica (Carmel, Calif.) and first-year
Grant Gallagher (Irvine, Calif.), 8-5.
- The Engineers rattled off victories in the No. 6, No. 5, and No. 4 singles positions to clinch the match. First-year
Shrish Choudhary (Fremont, Calif.) topped Freier, 6-2, 6-0, while Sun followed with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over
Devan Sabapathy. First-year
Siddharth Marathe (Pune, India) won the decisive match as he defeated
Rumaish Khastgir, 6-2, 6-3.
- The Violets took the top three spots of the singles ladder, resulting in the 5-4 final score. Frowein battled junior
Ryan Xiao (Cary, N.C.) for a 6-4, 7-5 victory In the No. 3 slot while Zheng bested Kahler, 4-6, 6-4, 10-7 in the No. 1 position. Chen closed out the match with a 3-6, 6-4, 10-7 win over Papacica.
UP NEXT:
- Both teams return to action on Saturday, April 20. MIT will play new NEWMAC foe Salve Regina University at 6:00 p.m. at the International Tennis Hall of Fame while NYU will host SUNY Oneonta at 5:00 p.m.
