No. 11 MIT Defeats No. 18 Babson, 6-3

THE BASICS:

- Scores: No. 11 MIT 6, No. 18 Babson College 3

- The Lead: In a battle of undefeated NEWMAC women's tennis teams, No. 11 MIT emerged with a 6-3 victory over No. 18 Babson College on Friday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- Junior Jay Lu (Austin, Texas) and first-year Saina Deshpande (Pune, India) grabbed the first win of the day by defeating Elena Keitt and Juliette Moschella, 8-1, in No. 3 doubles. Senior Kimberly Liao (Commack, N.Y.) and first-year Anastasia Samets (Ocean, N.J.) followed in the No. 2 spot by winning 8-3 over Adèle Fernández and Chaniel Soffer. Babson secured the last doubles point as sophomores Alaina Kolli (Buffalo Grove, Ill.) and Artemis Pados (Delray Beach, Calif.) fell to Olivia Soffer and Matia Cristiani, 8-4.

- Kolli kicked off the singles matches by defeating Kamila Stasiowska in the fourth slot, 6-2, 6-1, followed by Samets claiming a 6-0, 6-3 win in the No. 6 spot over Mariana Campos. Babson narrowed the gap to 4-3 as Cristiani defeated Liao in the No. 2 position, 6-2, 6-2, and Oliva Soffer battled first-year Katya Shepherd Johnson (Takoma Park, Md.) for a 6-4, 7-5 victory in the top slot. The Engineers bounced back as Lu clinched the match by defeating Chaniel Soffer 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 3 position while Deshpande outlasted Rizk, 6-2, 7-6 (0), in the No. 5 spot.

- Lu is currently tied with Dora Tzeng '18 for second all-time at MIT in career wins with 126.

- The Engineers return to the courts on Saturday, April 20 at 12:00 p.m. to celebrate Senior Day and host Wheaton College.
