The Lead: The MIT men's track and field team recorded seven victories and six nationally-ranked performances at the Sean Collier Invitational this past weekend.
EVENT HIGHLIGHTS:
- In the 1500m Invitational during Friday's Sean Collier Distance Night, senior
Henry Hardart (Annapolis, Md.) came away with the victory in 3:49.75 while junior
Simon Opsahl (Redlands, Calif.) was right behind him with a PR of 3:49.83. Junior
Ziyad Hassan's (Ashburn, Va.) PR of 3:50.12 resulted in a fourth-place finish as junior
Sam Coutts (Pacific Grove, Calif.) was eighth (3:53.96). Hardart and Opsahl's performances currently rank 16
th and 17
th in the nation this season.
- Junior
Walter Truitt (Houston, Texas) won the 110m hurdles in 14.51.
- Senior
Spencer Yandrofski (Mebane, N.C.) captured first place in the high jump at a height of 1.87m (6' 1.5").
- Sophomore
Sawyer Garrett (Sherborn, Mass.) cleared 4.40m (14' 5.25") on his last attempt to win the pole vault competition. Senior
Mark Mosser (Webster, Minn.) finished third with a PR of 4.25m (13' 11.25") while senior
Trey Gurga (San Diego, Calif.) was fourth at 4.10m (13' 5.25").
- In the long jump, graduate student
Kenneth Wei (Mount Sinai, N.Y.) finished first with a distance of 7.16m (23' 6") as sophomore
Sean Huckleberry (San Francisco, Calif.) was third with a PR of 6.72m (22' 0.75"). Sophomore
Nathan Shapiro (Glenview, Ill.) rounded out the Engineers in fifth place with a leap of 6.65m (21' 10"). Huckleberry was also the runner up in the triple jump with a mark of 14.15m (46' 5.25").
- Junior
Sam Engebretson (Sioux Falls, S.D.) won the discus (49.24m / 161' 6") and hammer throw (58.20m / 190' 11"), with his hammer throw performance ranking 12
th in Division III this year. Also competing in the hammer throw, first-year
Connor Kalvar (Floyd's Knobbs, Ind.) placed sixth with a distance of 48.96m (160' 7").
- Sophomore
Jake Cobb (West Deptford, N.J.) was the runner up in the 3000m steeplechase as he crossed the finish line in 9:14.46.
- Junior
Ian Koe (San Mateo, Calif.) finished second in the 200m (21.74) while senior
Will Liu (San Marino, Calif.) was sixth (22.34).
- Engebretson captured second place in the shot put as his throw of 16.79m (55' 1") is ninth in the country. First-year
Justin Buonato (Horsham, Pa.), meanwhile, placed sixth with a distance of 13.81m (45' 3.75").
- In the javelin, first-year
Jonah Goldstein (Pasadena, Calif.) was the runner-up with a PR of 55.95m (183' 7") while sophomore
Jackson Bliey (Talleyville, Del.) was seventh at 48.12m (157' 10").
- Graduate student
Vedang Lad (Plainsboro, N.J.) placed fifth (14:28.29) in the 5000m Invitational as graduate student
Lowell Hensgen (Raleigh, N.C.) was seventh (14.41.03). In Saturday's 5000m race, first-year
Yichen Sun (Chapel Hill, N.C.) was third in 15:19.16, followed by first-year
Nate Martinez (Thompson's Station, Tenn.) in fifth place (15:41.17), and junior
Carlos Villa (Wadsworth, Ill.) in sixth place (15:58.02).
- First-year
Connor Sterling (New Milford, Conn.) and sophomore
Conrad Casebolt (Aurora, Colo.) placed fourth (50.60) and fifth (50.86) in the 400m.
- Hassan (1:51.02) and Opsahl (1:51.60) finished fourth and fifth in the 800m. Hassan's time currently ranks 14
th in the NCAA while Opsahl's PR stands at 19
th.
- In the 100m, Liu placed sixth (10.94) as senior
Garrett Whitmore (Webster City, Iowa) was eighth (11.11).
