The Lead: The MIT softball team extended its winning streak to four games with a NEWMAC doubleheader sweep of Wellesley on Senior Day.
Prior to first pitch, the Engineers recognized their four seniors:
Malia Smith (Boise, Idaho),
Mackenzie Relihan (Naperville, Ill.),
Katia Pendowski (Elk Grove Village, Ill.), and
Rylie Spiegel (Rumson, N.J.).
HOW IT HAPPENED vs. GAME ONE
- The Blue took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but Relihan tied it up in the second on an RBI single.
- First-year
Arianna Kumar (San Diego, Calif.) put MIT in the lead with a single to left in the third, and a sacrifice fly from sophomore
Kara Hines (Cynthiana, Ky.) made it a 3-1 game.
- Wellesley got to within one on an RBI single from
Sarah Wicker in the fifth.
- Relihan and Spiegel helped the Engineers tack on two more runs in the sixth as they took game one, 5-2.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Sophomore
Caroline Langmeyer (Upper Arlington, Ohio) tossed a complete game four-hitter to move to 11-3. She walked three and struck out six.
- Relihan, Hines, Kumar, and junior
Mikayla Cable (Valrico, Fla.) all had two hits each in the game. Relihan led the way with two RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED vs. GAME TWO
- Cable hit a two-run shot over the left field wall in the first to give MIT the lead. She then singled to center in the second to put MIT up 3-0.
- Junior
Mackenzie Bivin (San Diego, Calif.) hit a bases-clearing triple to make it 6-0, and Hines hit a two-run double to increase the MIT lead to eight. Relihan capped an eight-run second with an RBI single to make it 10-0.
- Pendowski made it 11-0 in the fourth with an RBI single to center.
- Wellesley scored three in the fifth, but MIT earned the 11-3 win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Sophomore
Nicole Doering (St. Louis Park, Minn.) earned the complete game win to improve to 2-0.
- With her three RBI, Bivin becomes the first player in program history to eclipse the 100 RBI mark as she has 101 in her career. Her triple was the 10th in her career, and she is tied for fourth all-time.
- Cable went 2-3 with two runs scored and three RBI. Hines and Pendowski also recorded two hits each in the game.

- MIT is back in action on Friday, April 26 when the Engineers welcome Emerson to Briggs Field for a NEWMAC doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
