Big Second Half Propels MIT to 25-10 Victory Over Salve Regina on Senior Day

THE BASICS:

- Score: MIT 25, Salve Regina University 10

- Records: MIT (6-9, 5-2 NEWMAC); Salve Regina (4-9, 3-4 NEWMAC)

- Location: Cambridge, Mass. (Roberts Field at Steinbrenner Stadium)

- The Lead: MIT outscored Salve Regina University, 13-3, in the second half en route to a 25-10 victory in NEWMAC men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon. Senior Heath Nilsen (Carlsbad, Calif.) amassed three goals and four assists for the Engineers while Chris Koltzan paced the Seahawks with three goals and two assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- MIT generated four goals in the first 3:32 of play as sophomore Zach Bleil (New Canaan, Conn.) provided the first and last goals of the scoring burst. Salve Regina battled back as it narrowed the gap to 6-4 at the end of the first quarter. Max Beauchamp and Koltzan both notched one goal and one assist.

- The Engineers put together a 6-1 run in the second stanza as a natural hat trick by sophomore Bryce Metalios (Old Greenwich, Conn.) increased their lead to 12-5 with 1:54 on the clock. The Seahawks countered with two goals during the final 22 seconds as Koltzan was a factor in both. He earned the assist on a strike by Liam Cooney and then redirected a feed from Daniel Naglieri with three seconds remaining.

- MIT responded with seven unanswered goals to open the third quarter, moving the score to 19-7. Metalios netted three goals while sophomore Garrett Campagna (Lancaster, Pa.) earned his fifth and sixth assists of the game, the last on a man-up strike by senior Jack McCordic (Medfield, Mass.). Koltzan ended Salve Regina's scoring drought with 1:32 left in the frame.

- The Engineers continued to control the action in the fourth quarter as they registered a 6-2 scoring advantage. Junior Nick Stiles (New Canaan, Conn.) and senior Bennett Stankovits (Rumson, N.J.) both scored twice for the hosts. Beauchamp and Jackson Noury accounted for the Seahawks' goals in the period.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Campagna dished out six assists, which is one shy of the program record that was set by Ryan Ballentine '09 in 2008. Metalios ended the day with six goals while Stiles had four. Bleil bolstered the offense with three goals and one assist as graduate student Andrew Palleiko (Hopkinton, Mass.) collected 11 groundballs and won 16 of his 29 faceoff attempts. First-year Stone Smith (Roswell, Ga.) registered four groundballs and two caused turnovers while senior Luke Chapman (Houston, Texas) totaled three groundballs and three caused turnovers. In net, graduate student David Vapnek (San Diego, Calif.) amassed 15 saves.

- Beauchamp finished with two goals and one assist while Cooney and Noury both posted two goals. Kieran Hughes gathered 10 groundballs and went 15-of-27 in faceoffs as Andrew Hazzard made 17 saves.

- This was the first meeting between both programs since 2011 and MIT is now 2-3 all-time against Salve Regina.

- MIT's 25 goals was one shy of tying the program record which was set against Nowrich University in 1969.

UP NEXT:

- Both teams earned spots in the upcoming NEWMAC Tournament. As the No. 3 seed, MIT will travel to No. 2 Springfield College for a semifinal game on Thursday, May 2. Meanwhile, No. 5 Salve Regina will visit No. 4 Wheaton College for a first-round game on Tuesday, April 30.
