The Lead: The MIT softball team won its eighth straight game as the Engineers earned a doubleheader sweep over Smith on the road on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED vs. GAME ONE
- Smith got on the board in the fourth on a homer by
Taz Tamai.
- The Engineers took the lead in the bottom of the frame on an RBI double by senior
Katia Pendowski (Elk Grove Village, Ill.), and a two-run homer by junior
Mikayla Cable (Valrico, Fla.).
- Cable tripled home the fourth run of the day for MIT in the sixth and scored the fifth run on an RBI groundout from first-year
Nicole Johnston (St. Charles, Ill.).
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Sophomore
Caroline Langmeyer (Upper Arlington, Ohio) earned her 13th victory of the year with her complete game. She gave up just one run on nine hits with two walks. She struck out eight and now has 110 strikeouts on the year.
- Cable went 3-4 with three RBI. Johnston also recorded three hits in the game.
HOW IT HAPPENED vs. GAME TWO
- Senior
Rylie Spiegel (Rumson, N.J.) doubled home the first two runs of the day for the Engineers in the second, but the Pioneers tied the game in the bottom half of the inning.
- Junior
Mackenzie Bivin (San Diego, Calif.) tripled home Cable to put MIT back in the lead, and RBI hits from junior
Kennedy Adkison (San Jose, Calif.) and Pendowski made it a 5-2 Engineer lead in the third.
- MIT tacked on four runs in the fourth on RBI hits from Adkison and Johnston, and first-year
Arianna Kumar (San Diego, Calif.) doubled home two runs.
- Smith scored five unanswered runs to cut the Engineer lead to 9-7 after five.
- Relihan added insurance runs with a two-run double, and Bivin secured the victory with a two-run homer to make it 13-7.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Bivin is now tied for the program record in career home runs with 10. She is also fourth all-time in career triples with 11. She went 2-4 with three RBI and three runs.
- Adkison went 4-4 with two RBI and two runs scored while Relihan also tallied three hits and two RBI in the game.
- Cable went 2-4 from the leadoff spot with three runs scored.
UP NEXT:
- MIT will host its final non-conference doubleheader of the season when the Engineers welcome Endicott to Briggs Field for a doubleheader on Wednesday, May 1st beginning at 3 p.m.
