No. 8 Womens Tennis Defeats Salve Regina, 9-0

THE BASICS:

- Scores: No. 8 MIT - 9, Salve Regina University - 0

- Records: MIT (14-3, 9-0 NEWMAC), Salve Regina (3-14, 1-8 NEWMAC)

- Location: Newport, R.I. (Antone Academic Center)

- The Lead: The No. 8 MIT women's tennis team completed a perfect NEWMAC season with a 9-0 victory over Salve Regina Saturday afternoon in Newport, R.I. With the win the Engineers have secured the No. 1 seed for next weekend's NEWMAC Women's Tennis Tournament.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- MIT won all three of its doubles matches with the first win of the day coming from junior Jay Lu (Austin, Texas) and first-year Saina Deshpande (Pune, India) 8-0 in No. 3 doubles over Casey Farrell and Kaydin Pinto. In the top slot sophomores Alaina Kolli (Buffalo Grove, Ill.) and Artemis Pados (Delray Beach, Fla.) registered a swift 8-0 win against Stephanie Davis and Alexa Stevens. First-year Anastasia Samets (Ocean, N.J.) and senior Kimberly Liao (Commack, N.Y.) secured the last doubles win 8-3 over Madigan Murphy and Sadie Rieg in No. 2 doubles.

- Kolli and Samets both earned 6-0, 6-0 wins against Elena Murdock and Graysen Scherer in the No. 3 and No. 5 positions respectively.

- In the No. 2 position Lu secured a 6-0, 6-1 win against Murphy, while Deshpande defeated Pinto 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 4 position.

- First-year Katya Shepherd Johnson (Takoma Park, Md.) defeated Stevens 6-1, 6-0 in the top slot. Fellow first-year Sophia Min (Naples, Fla.) closed out the match with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Ellysa Tancrede in the No. 6 position.

UP NEXT:

- The Engineers will host the winner of Mount Holyoke and Smith in a NEWMAC semifinal on Saturday, May 4th on the DuPont Tennis Courts.
