NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – The MIT women's tennis team had a solid showing at the New England Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament this past weekend at Smith College and Amherst College. No. 2 seeded Selma Petrie and
Sophia Min were the runners-up in the "B" draw championship while
Alicen Liu and
Nishi Gandra captured the "B" draw consolation title.
HOW IT HAPPENED – "A" Draw:
- Recipients of a first-round bye, top-seeded Fiona Lee and Katie Driscoll won their doubles match, 7-6 (3), against the team from Wesleyan in the quarterfinals, however, Lee and Driscoll lost their singles matches in three sets. The duo went on to defeat teammates Sophia Yang and Rayna Li, 6-3, in the doubles match of the North Bracket Semifinal.
- Saina Deshpande and Anastasia Samets opened the tournament by winning their singles matches against Colby on Friday. The next day in the quarterfinals, they lost to the No. 3/4 seeded duo of Tina She and Karolina Dobiecka of Amherst. Desphande and Samets wrapped up the weekend by defeating Chloe Zeng and Megan Sun, 6-4, in the doubles match of the North Bracket Semifinal.
- The trio of Zeng, Carley Chen, and Sun collaborated for a sweep of the team from Smith on Friday afternoon. The following morning in the quarterfinals, the Engineers lost to No. 2 seed Leila Epstein and Sarah Youngberg of Wesleyan before facing Deshpande and Samets in the North Bracket Semifinal.
- Yang and Li won their opening matches against Maddie Swire and Maya Muhunthan of Amherst by 6-2 scores in doubles and singles action. They fell to the No. 3/4 team from Wesleyan in the quarterfinals and then squared off with Lee and Driscoll in the North Bracket Semifinal.
HOW IT HAPPENED – "B" Draw:
- Petrie and Min defeated the team from Smith on Friday afternoon. In the semifinal against Rachel Roth and Katja Jules Viberg of Amherst, they won the doubles match, 7-6, while Petrie picked up a victory in singles to advance to the championship. MIT defeated top-seeded Michaela Landry and Tina Barrow of Colby, 6-4, in doubles action but lost both single matches.
- Liu and Gandra fell to Landry and Barrow on Friday but won all three matches against Olivia Chin and Emily Wang of Smith in the consolation semifinal, highlighted by Gandra's come-from-behind 1-6, 6-2, 10-6, singles victory. The duo went on to sweep their three matches against Sabrina Wang and Marielle Sauber of Smith for the "B" Draw Consolation Championship.
