NEWMAC Champs! Men's Tennis Defeats Babson, 5-0, for 24th NEWMAC Title

THE BASICS:
 
- Location: Cambridge, Mass. (DuPont Tennis Courts)
 
- Scores: No. 28 MIT - 5, No. 29 Babson - 0
 
- Records: MIT (18-3), Babson (14-9)
 
- The Lead: For the 24th time in program history, the MIT men's tennis team is NEWMAC Tournament Champions as the Engineers defeated Babson, 5-0 on Sunday afternoon. This was the 20th postseason meeting between the two teams and MIT has now won eight straight championship matches between the two rivals. The Engineers have never lost a match in the NEWMAC Tournament.
 
With the win, the Engineers earn the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
 
Junior Ryan Xiao (Cary, N.C.) was named the Tournament's Most Outstanding Player as he went 2-0 and clinched the trophy for MIT on Sunday.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
 
- MIT took a commanding 3-0 lead after doubles play. Seniors Joseph Li (Naperville, Ill.) and Sundeep Chakladar (Redondo Beach, Calif.) gave MIT the lead with an 8-2 win in No. 2 doubles. In three doubles, senior Kailas Kahler (Pawtucket, R.I.) and first-year Adam Sun (Glendale, Ariz.) took an 8-3 win, and graduate student Daniel Papacica (Carmel, Calif.) and first-year Grant Gallagher (Irvine, Calif.) earned an 8-5 victory.
 
- First-year Shrish Choudhary (Fremont, Calif.) earned a 6-1, 6-3 win in No. 6 singles to give MIT match point. Xiao won the first set 6-0 in No. 3 singles but dropped the second set to get to a decisive third set. Xiao held off Kerem Ozlale to win the set 6-2 and give MIT the match.

- MIT will await its opponent and the location for the NCAA Tournament when the championship field will be announced at 12:30 p.m. Eastern Time on Monday, May 6, on NCAA.com
