HOW IT HAPPENED

- Set 1: Springfield got off to an early lead in the set. Trailing 7-5, the Engineers went on a 7-0 run and cruised to a first set win, 25-19.

- Set 2: MIT took an early 4-3 lead but the Pride scored nine straight unanswered points, and Springfield took the set 25-16.

- Set 3: The third set was a back-and-forth affair between the teams, featuring 10 ties and six lead changes. Despite MIT cutting the Springfield lead to one (22-21), the Pride converted three straight kills to take the set, 25-21.

- Set 4: This would be yet another nail-biting set with 17 ties. With the set tied 24-24, a crucial kill from senior Phillip Johnson (Chandler, Ariz.) and a service ace from first-year Ryan Espinoza (Los Angeles, Calif.) sent the teams to a decisive fifth set.

- Set 5: The decisive set featured 11 ties and seven lead changes. With the score tied at 15-15, the Engineers got a kill from graduate student Nick Gustafson (San Diego, Calif.) and a solo block from Johnson to upset the Pride.
