Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Men's Lacrosse Cruises Past Coast Guard, 16-3

THE BASICS:

- Score: MIT 16, U.S. Coast Guard Academy 3

- Records: MIT (3-8, 2-2 NEWMAC); Coast Guard (2-8, 1-3 NEWMAC)

- Location: Cambridge, Mass. (Roberts Field)

- The Lead: A pair of four-goal games from sophomores Garrett Campagna (Lancaster, Pa.) and Bryce Metalios (Old Greenwich, Conn.) were more than enough for the MIT men's lacrosse team as it defeated the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, 16-3, in NEWMAC action on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- The Engineers got off to a hot start in the opening period, scoring four goals in which two were netted from Campagna (both unassisted and one man-up opportunity) and the other two coming from junior Dylan Nelson (Sleepy Hallow, N.Y.), assisted by Metalios and junior Nick Stiles (New Canaan, Conn.). The Bears would avoid going scoreless as Ian Feely, assisted from Ryan Hunter, found the back of the net.

- Metalios netted two in the second period for MIT, with senior Heath Nilsen (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Stiles earning the assists. Then, the Engineers put up another goal as Campagna collected his third goal of the game with 1:25 in the half to give the Engineers a 7-1 cushion heading into the break.

- MIT would collect another three goals in the beginning of the second half. Stiles found the back of the net with the help of Campagna while Metalios would collect his last two goals of the contest right after with the help of Nilsen and Stiles, giving MIT a 10-1 lead heading into the final frame.

- In the fourth quarter, the Engineers found the back of the net six times while Coast Guard scored twice. Nilsen and Stiles (assist from Nilsen) found the back of the net first in the period. For the Bears, Eric Key scored on a man-down opportunity. Campagna recorded his fourth goal of the game at the 6:24 mark. Less than 30 seconds later, Noah Heller produced the final goal for Coast Guard. First-year Ryan Quinn (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) collected his first career goal at the 3:34 mark. Nine seconds later, graduate student Andrew Palleiko (Hopkinton, Mass.) scored from a successful face-off win. Sophomore Oscar Lindenthal (Vero Beach, Fla.) registered the final goal of the game with the help of first-year Hayden Calabretta (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.).

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Palleiko led both teams in groundballs as he collected with 11 while junior Brennan Hoppa (Hampstead, N.H.) and first-year Ashton Axe (Portola Valley, Calif.) corralled five groundballs each for the Engineers. Abe Al-Khalili paced Coast Guard with six groundballs.

- Graduate student David Vapnek (San Diego, Calif.) picked up his third win of the year and made six saves in 51 minutes of action while sophomore Collin Lung (Lynbrook, N.Y.) turned away four shots in nine minutes for the Engineers. Matt Reheuser racked up 10 saves for the Bears.
