Women's Lacrosse Rallies to Defeat Springfield, 15-10, in NEWMAC Semifinal

THE BASICS:

- Score: No. 20 MIT 15, Springfield College 10

- Records: MIT (16-3); Springfield (15-4)

- Location: Springfield, Mass. (Stagg Field)

- The Lead: Despite a four-goal deficit, No. 20 MIT put together a 10-1 run that powered it to a 15-10 victory over No. 2 seeded Springfield College in the semifinals of the NEWMAC Women's Lacrosse Tournament on Wednesday night. Senior Ellie Rabenold (Cincinnati, Ohio) scored a goal in each quarter while first-year Pauline Vien (Brookline, Mass.) collected seven saves and two groundballs in the second half for the No. 3 seeded Engineers.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- Springfield recorded a trio of quick goals and then netted its fourth with 1:46 left in the opening frame. Rabenold replied by putting MIT on the board with nine seconds on the clock.

- Just over a minute into the second quarter, sophomore Annica Lam (Livingston, N.J.) cut the Engineers' deficit in half. A brief exchange of goals followed as sophomore Gwen Flusche (Ridgewood, N.J.) scored on a feed from junior Julianne Flusche (Ridgewood, N.J.), narrowing the gap to 5-3 at the 11:57 mark. A defensive battle ensued until Rabenold redirected a feed from sophomore Ashley Thomas (Summit, N.J.) with 4:35 remaining. Springfield responded with back-to-back player-advantage goals, increasing its cushion to 7-4. However, Gwen Flusche scored an unassisted goal at the buzzer to keep MIT within striking distance.

- The Pride created some breathing room after 1:04 elapsed in the third quarter, but the Engineers generated six straight goals to go ahead for good. Senior Meredith Arterburn (Cooksville, Md.) produced back-to-back goals, including what proved to be the game-winner, during the final 3:15 of the frame.

- MIT continued to pull away as a trio of goals extended its advantage to 14-8 with 6:43 left to play. Thomas kicked off the scoring in the fourth quarter while Arterburn and Rabenold followed with free-position goals. Springfield ended its scoring drought at the 5:27 mark, however, Thomas connected on a pass from Arterburn exactly 1:14 later. The Pride then notched the final goal of the night with 1:12 remaining.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- To go along with her team-high scoring performance, Rabenold added four groundballs, two caused turnovers, and one draw control. Arterburn and Thomas both finished with three goals and one assist while Gwen Flusche tallied two goals, one assist, five draw controls, and three groundballs. Julianne Flusche corralled five draw controls as senior Katie Bell (Radnor, Pa.) chipped in three groundballs. In net, sophomore Molly Dulde (Delafield, Wis.) made three saves in the first half.

UP NEXT:

- MIT will travel to top-seeded and nationally-ranked No. 16 Babson College for the NEWMAC Championship on Saturday, May 4. This is the second year in a row and the third time in program history the Engineers earned a spot in the title game. In addition, this will be the second consecutive championship featuring MIT and Babson.
