- The Lead: The No. 25 MIT men's tennis team earned a thrilling upset win over No. 10 Trinity (TX), 5-2, to advance to the Regional Championship against host and No. 7 Middlebury tomorrow at 12 p.m.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a loss in No. 3 doubles, the Engineers tied the match as first-year
Grant Gallagher (Irvine, Calif.) and senior
Daniel Papacica (Carmel, Calif.) took an 8-6 win in No. 1 doubles. Seniors
Joseph Li (Naperville, Ill.) and
Sundeep Chakladar (Redondo Beach, Calif.) gave MIT a 2-1 lead with an 8-6 victory in No. 2 doubles.
- Trinity tied the match with a 6-4, 6-3 win in No. 4 singles but the Engineers regained the lead with a 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 win by
Siddharth Marathe (Pune, India) in No. 5 singles
.
- Kahler gave the Engineers match point with a three-set win in No. 1 singles and Papacica clinched the match with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 win in No. 2 singles.
UP NEXT
- The Engineers will take on host and No. 7 Middlebury tomorrow, Sunday, May 12 at 12 p.m. for the Regional Championship and a trip to St. Louis for the team championship.
