Softball Opens NCAA Regional with 4-1 Win Over New Paltz

THE BASICS:

- Score: MIT - 4, New Paltz - 1

- Records: MIT (29-12), New Paltz (35-7)

- Location: Glassboro, NJ (Rowan Softball Field)

- The Lead: The MIT softball team took an early 2-0 and held on for a 4-1 win in the opening round of the NCAA Regional. The Engineers, the No. 2 seed in the Rowan Regional, defeated No. 3 seed New Paltz to advance to tomorrow's winner's bracket.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Junior Mikayla Cable (Valrico, Fla.) led off the bottom of the first with a single, and first-year Nicole Johnston (St. Charles, Ill.) followed with a walk. Junior Mackenzie Bivin (San Diego, Calif.) then doubled them both home to give the Engineers the early 2-0 lead.

- The Hawks got runners on in innings two-four, but sophomore Caroline Langmeyer (Upper Arlington, Ohio) got out of both innings without allowing a run. New Paltz strung together three singles in the fifth to push across a run to make it a one-run game.

- Cable reached on a two-out bunt, and Johnston followed with a single to center and advanced to second on the throw. Bivin again came through with a two-RBI single to make it 4-1 MIT.

- New Paltz put runners on second and third with one out in the sixth, but Langmeyer got a strikeout and a ground out to keep MIT in the lead. After a two-out walk in the seventh, Langmeyer got Kelsey O'Brien looking to end the game.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Langmeyer improved to 20-4 on the year with the complete game. She gave up one run on eight hits with two walks and four strikeouts.

- Cable, Johnston, and Bivin went a combined 5-8 at the top of the lineup with Cable and Bivin recording two hits each. Senior Mackenzie Relihan (Naperville, Ill.) recorded the other hit for the Engineers. Bivin knocked in a season-high four runs and is now tied for fourth in career doubles with 29.
