The Lead: The MIT softball team fell to No. 15 Rowan to open the day but rebounded to defeat New Paltz, 7-1, and advance to tomorrow's Regional Championship.
HOW IT HAPPENED vs. ROWAN
- Junior
Mackenzie Bivin (San Diego, Calif.) gave MIT a 1-0 lead with an RBI single in the first.
- Rowan scored four runs in the third and added another in the fifth to go up 5-1.
- First-year
Arianna Kumar (San Diego, Calif.) hit a two-out two-run single to right-center to cut the Profs lead to 5-3.
- Rowan added an insurance run in the sixth to go up three. First-year
Nicole Johnston (St. Charles, Ill.), and Bivin hit two-out singles in the seventh, but the Profs got the final out to win the game.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Johnston, Bivin, and Kumar all had two hits each in the game.
- Sophomore
Caroline Langmeyer (Upper Arlington, Ohio) fell to 20-5 as she pitched five innings and gave up eight hits and five runs, two of which were earned. She walked three and struck out five.
HOW IT HAPPENED vs. NEW PALTZ
- Junior
Kennedy Adkison (San Jose, Calif.) got MIT on the board with a two-run single to right. Senior
Rylie Spiegel (Rumson, N.J.) singled home the third run for MIT, and classmate
Katia Pendowski (Elk Grove Village, Ill.) followed with a single down the third base line to make it a four-run first.
- The Hawks cut the MIT lead to three with an RBI double in the fourth and put two runners on with no outs in the fifth. Langmeyer then retired the next three Hawk batters to keep the Engineers in the lead.
- Bivin gave MIT a 5-1 lead with an RBI single in the sixth, and senior
Mackenzie Relihan (Naperville, Ill.) doubled home two more runs in the seventh to make it a 7-1 lead. Langmeyer then retired the Hawks in order in the seventh to give MIT the win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Junior
Becca O'Connor (San Antonio, Texas) got her fifth win on the season as she tossed four innings and allowed just one run on four hits and two walks. Langmeyer earned the save with three innings of one-hit ball with one walk and four Ks.
- Adkison led the way with three hits while Spiegel and Relihan had two hits each in the game. Relihan led the team with two RBI in the game.
UP NEXT:
- MIT will face No. 15 Rowan in the Regional Championship with game one beginning at 11 a.m. tomorrow. The Engineers will need to win two games to advance to next week's Super Regional.
