Softball Ends Regular Season With Doubleheader Sweep of Clark

The Lead: The MIT softball team sealed the No. 3 seed for the NEWMAC Tournament with a sweep of Clark to conclude the regular season for the Engineers. Sophomore Olivia Scarpaci (Staten Island, N.Y.) hit two home runs and knocked in five runs.  

HOW IT HAPPENED vs. GAME ONE

- Junior Kennedy Adkison (San Jose, Calif.) knocked in the first run of the day for the Engineers in the third on a fielder's choice and came around to score on a Clark error to make it 2-0. Sophomore Olivia Scarpaci (Staten Island, N.Y.) hit her second homer on the year to up the MIT lead to 4-0.
 
- Felicia Salvati homered with one out in the fourth, and the Cougars got two runners in scoring position, but sophomore Caroline Langmeyer (Upper Arlington, Ohio) got Erin Slavin swinging to end the inning.
 
- Junior Mikayla Cable (Valrico, Fla.) doubled to left-center in the sixth to increase the MIT lead to 6-1, and a single by senior Mackenzie Relihan (Naperville, Ill.)  in the seventh sealed the 7-1 victory for MIT.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Cable increased her team lead in RBI to 36 as she went 2-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Scarpaci also recorded two hits and two RBI in the game.
 
- Langmeyer improved to 15-4 with her 14th complete game. She scattered eight hits and allowed just one run and one walk with 10 strikeouts to give her 118 on the season.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED vs. GAME TWO

- First-year Arianna Kumar (San Diego, Calif.) knocked in the first two runs of the game and came around to score on Scarpaci's second long ball of the day to give MIT a 4-0 lead after three.
 
- Clark got its first hit of the day in the third with a one-out double, but junior Becca O'Connor (San Antonio, Texas) did not allow another baserunner until a two-out walk in the sixth.
 
- Cable scored on a wild pitch in the fifth, and Scarpaci knocked in her third run of the day to give MIT a 6-0 lead in the fifth.
 
- Clark pushed a run across in the seventh on a wild pitch but the Engineers held on to complete the sweep.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Cable, Kumar, junior Mackenzie Bivin (San Diego, Calif.), and Scarpaci all contributed two hits for MIT in the game.
 
- O'Connor recorded her fourth win of the season with six innings of one-hit ball with one walk. First-year Sharona Huang (Duluth, Ga.) allowed one run on one hit in her inning of work.
 
UP NEXT:

-  The Engineers clinched the third seed in the NEWMAC Tournament and will play the winner of Monday's play-in game between Coast Guard and WPI on Wednesday, May 8th at 2:30 p.m. at Wheaton College.
