The Lead: The MIT softball team moved into the winner's bracket of the NEWMAC Tournament as the third-seeded Engineers earned victories over six-seed WPI and two-seed Wheaton. Sophomore Caroline Langmeyer (Upper Arlington, Ohio) earned two complete-game victories for the Engineers.

HOW IT HAPPENED vs. WPI

- Junior Kennedy Adkison (San Jose, Calif.) got the Engineers on the board in the first with an RBI single to third that scored first-year Nicole Johnston (St. Charles, Ill.).

- WPI took a 2-1 lead on a home run to left from Riley O'Brien in the second, but MIT responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame on RBI singles from first-year Arianna Kumar (San Diego, Calif.), Adkison, and sophomore Olivia Scarpaci (Staten Island, N.Y.) to take a 4-2 lead.

- Kumar knocked in another run with a sacrifice fly in the fourth, and junior Mikayla Cable (Valrico, Fla.) stole home to give MIT a four-run advantage.

- WPI loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth, but Langmeyer struck out Kallie Case to end the inning. WPI got a runner on in the seventh, however, they would not be able to score as Langmeyer secured the last out and the 6-2 win for MIT.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Langmeyer recorded her 16th win of the year as she allowed just two runs on four hits. She walked five and struck out nine.

- Johnston led MIT with three hits in the game while Cable and Adkison finished with two each.

HOW IT HAPPENED vs. WHEATON

- Wheaton took an early 1-0 lead on a double to center from Bryanna Agan in the first.

- Johnston crossed the plate on a Lyons error off the bat of Adkison to tie the game. Scarpaci followed with a walk to load the bases, and senior Katia Pendowski (Elk Grove Village, Ill.) put MIT ahead with a sacrifice fly.

- Senior Mackenzie Relihan (Naperville, Ill.) added two insurance runs for the Engineers with a two-run single in the sixth to score Adkison and Kumar and give MIT a 4-2 lead.

- Langmeyer retired Wheaton in order in the sixth, but the Lyons got a runner on third with two outs, but Langmeyer got the final out, and MIT took the 4-2 win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Langmeyer improved to 17-4 as she scattered five hits over seven innings. She walked one and struck out three.

- Kumar led the Engineers with two hits in the game.
