Baseball Concludes Season with 9-7 Loss at Babson in NEWMAC Tournament

THE BASICS:
 
- Score: Babson - 9, MIT - 7

- Records: MIT (17-20), Babson (26-10)

- Location: Babson Park, Mass. (Govoni Field)

- The Lead: The MIT baseball team concluded the 2024 season as the Engineers fell to Babson, 9-7, in the opening round of the NEWMAC Tournament. MIT entered as the sixth-seed while Babson earned the three-seed.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Babson scored the game's first five runs and held MIT scoreless until the fifth.
 
- Graduate student Kyle Sonandres (Torrance, Calif.) got MIT on the board with a RBI single, and senior Michael Finch (Brentwood, Tenn.) tied the game with a grand slam to right-center.
 
- The Beavers responded with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to take an 8-5 lead.
 
- Junior Reed Tubbs (Pflugerville, Texas) got MIT back to within one with a two-run homer in the seventh, but Babson tacked on a run in the eight to go up two, and the home team held on for the 9-7 win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Sonandres and Finch each recorded three hits on the day. Finch concluded the season with a team-leading 12 homers and ranked second with 34 RBI. Sonandres finished with a team-leading 37 RBI on the season.
 
- Senior Teddy Schoenfeld (Boulder, Colo.) added two hits and finished with a team-high .373 batting average. Graduate student Jake Sonandres (Torrance, Calif.) and Tubbs also had two hits in the game.
 
- MIT outhit the Beavers 16-10 as nine different Engineers recorded a hit in the game.
