Men's Soccer Suffers 3-0 Setback to Salve Regina

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. –  The visiting Salve Regina Seahawks used two second-half goals to secure a 3-0 victory over the MIT men's soccer team on Saturday afternoon on Roberts Field in NEWMAC action.

HOW IT HAPPENED: 
  • The Engineers took three shots in the first 10 minutes of action. First year Jonah Gurion had his shot turned away by Adonis Santiago (Oakdale, Conn.) at 6:29. Senior Jack Minor (Boca Raton, Fla.) had another scoring chance for the Engineers, but his shot rang off the crossbar.
  • Sophomore Daniel Goba (North Kingstown, R.I.) sent a pass in front of the goal to graduate student Jordan Borges (Milford, Mass.) who lifted the ball over Paolo Mangiafico (Farmington, Conn.) to give the visitors a 1-0 lead at 19:53.
  • Salve struck quickly in the second half when a shot from Borges hit off the crossbar back to junior Brandon Frank (Southbury, Conn.) who was able to head the ball into the goal at 48:01.
  • Goba dribbled past the MIT defense to score the third Seahawks' goal of the game at 52:34.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 
  • MIT held a slight edge in shots (8-6), but the visitors had a 5-1 advantage in shots on goal. The Engineers held a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.
  • Managafico made one save and dropped to 2-3.
  • Santiago improved to 3-0 and made one save in goal.
  • Goba recorded his sixth goal of the season.
UP NEXT: 
  • MIT remains on Roberts Field as the Engineers will welcome Endicott for a 6:00 PM non-conference match on Tuesday, October 1.
