Men's Soccer Takes 2-1 Road Win Over Western New England

Springfield, Mass. – The MIT men's soccer team held off a late Western New England rally as the Engineers earned a 2-1 road victory over the Golden Bears on Sunday afternoon.  
 
THE BASICS
  • Score: MIT 2, Western New England 1
  • Records: MIT (3-1-0 Overall), Western New England (2-2-1 Overall)
HOW IT HAPPENED: 
  • After a scoreless first half, first year Shikhar Motupally (Avon, Conn.) raced past the Western New England defense and set up classmate Jonah Gurion (Rye, N.Y.) with a pass right outside the box. Gurion lifted the shot into the top right-hand corner of the goal at 52:25.
  • Graduate student Aidan Hallinan (Carlsbad, Calif.) grabbed a pass from first year Eric Ye (Cary, N.C.) and went bottom left to give the Engineers a 2-0 advantage at 82:25.
  • Western New England cut the MIT lead to one with a goal at 84:24 when first year Tyler Lewis (Suffield, Conn.) went past the Engineer defense and got the shot past a diving Hernando Ardila (Miramar, Fla.).
INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 
  • Hallinan posted his second game-winning goal of the season. He has four goals already this season, one shy of his career best.
  • Gurion recorded his second career goal with Motupally notching his second assist and sixth point of the season.
  • Ardila made three saves to improve to 2-0 on the season.
  • Braylon Casinghino (Brimfield, Mass.) made seven saves for the Golden Bears.
  • Each team took 15 shots in the game with MIT holding a 9-4 advantage in shots on target.  
UP NEXT: 
  • MIT remains on the road as the Engineers head to Bristol, RI to take on Roger Williams on Wednesday, September 11 at 7:00 PM.
