SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – The MIT women's basketball team outscored Springfield College, 23-6, in the second quarter, giving it a lead it would not relinquish as it captured a 67-42 victory in the NEWMAC opener for both teams played at Mount Holyoke College on Saturday afternoon. Senior
Elise Harvey (Wayland, Mass.) led all players with a career-high 21 points to go along with eight rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- A 9-2 burst that was capped by a four-point play with 16 seconds left gave Springfield an 18-9 lead at the end of the first quarter.
- Sparked by a steal and then a layup by senior Kamsi Nwogu (Algonquin, Ill.), MIT went on a 16-3 run that put it up, 25-21, midway through the second stanza. The Engineers continued to increase their lead as a three-pointer by senior Sarah Berman (York, Pa.) at the halftime buzzer made the score 32-24.
- MIT controlled the action in the third quarter as it outscored the Pride, 20-7, en route to a 52-31 advantage.
- Despite the deficit Springfield continued to attack as an 11-5 run brought it within 57-42 with 4:55 on the clock. The Engineers responded with a three from Harvey as they went on to record the final 10 points of the game.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Nwogu totaled 14 points, five rebounds, two steals and a block as senior Angie Choi (Cypress, Calif.) registered eight points, eight rebounds, five assists, and four steals.
- Junior Alice Hall (Ambler, Pa.) chipped in eight points, four rebounds, and three blocks.
