No. 18 Men's Volleyball Earns 3-1 Road Win Over Regis

WESTON, Mass. - The No. 18 MIT men's volleyball team fell behind 0-1 but rallied to win the next three sets to improve to 5-0 on the season as the Engineers defeated Regis on the road in a Friday night non-conference match.  

THE BASICS:  

  • Score: MIT 3, Regis 1  
  • Records: MIT (5-0 Overall), Regis (1-3 Overall) 

HOW IT HAPPENED:  

Set 1: A 5-0 Regis run gave the host a 9-4 lead which they would not relinquish. MIT got even at 14-14 off a Pride attack error but the Engineers could not take the lead as 5-1 run gave Regis a 19-15 advantage and propelled them to a 25-20 set one win. 

Set 2: Back-to-back kills from junior Michael Rini (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and first-year Maddox Brandenburg (Carlsbad, Calif.) gave the Engineers a 7-6 lead. After Regis tied it up, MIT went on a 4-0 run capped by a kill from senior Grant Oh (Irvine, Calif.). Two straight attacking errors from the Pride gave MIT the 25-16 win.  

Set 3: Brandenburg kick started a 5-0 run to put MIT up 10-6. Regis pulled to within one with a 3-0 spurt to make it a 12-11 match, but MIT held on to the lead as a kill from junior Kevin Windisch (Placentia, Calif.) gave the Engineers the 25-22 win.  
Set 4: MIT raced out to a 5-1 lead on a service ace from Riley Oh (Irvine, Calif.). Windisch sparked a 4-0 run capped by an ace from sophomore Ryan Espinoza (Los Angeles, Calif.) to give the Engineers a 13-5 advantage. Regis crept back with a 3-0 lead to make it a 20-14 match, but back-to-back kills from first-year Hansen Fan (Center Valley, Pa.) and senior Riley Oh (Irvine, Calif.) gave the Engineers the 25-16 win. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:  

  • Grant Oh led the way for MIT with 18 kills and hit .364 in the match. He also collected a team-high of five aces and nine digs. Windisch and Brandenburg added seven kills each. 
  • Riley Oh collected 27 assists in the match.  
  • Rini and Espinoza racked up three blocks each.  

UP NEXT:  

  • MIT returns to action on Tuesday, January 28 when they head to Emerson for a 7:00 PM match.
